After the past few feverous and hot-blooded episodes, Attack of Titan needed to pace the incidents to allow a cool-down. Episode 9 of season 4 provides a much-needed break from the emotionally charged scenes.
Episode 68 slows down the tempo but stuffs all the vital background information into us in the smoothest manner possible. The occurrences of the past three years have been explained, and Zeke’s plans are brushed upon in this episode.
1. Anti Marleyan Volunteers
Armin recalls everything that had happened for the past three years. Yelena had come to the Paradis Island along with Marley’s fleet. She is a supporter of Zeke Jeager and states that she belongs to the Anti-Marleyan Faction, which aims “To free the Eldian people.”
While this faction stays at Paradis, they taught the Paradisians about modern warfare techniques, transport, and communication.
2. Motive Behind the Attack on Liberio
Episode 68 gives us a shaky idea of what Zeke wants from Paradis. Apparently, he is in support of the Eldians, and he needs the Founding Titan and a titan of royal blood for his plan.
Eren states that what Zeke says is somewhat correct because the only time he was able to activate the Founding Titan’s power was when he came in contact with a Titan who had royal blood. The royal blooded titan in question was Dina Fritz, the other wife of Eren’s father.
Eren believes that Zeke, being the son of Dina, has figured out a way to elude the vow of renouncing war. He has been deluded into believing that the only way the Paradisians can survive is by activating the rumbling.
3. Can Zeke be Trusted?
Zeke has not clarified his plans. He knows that Paradis has no other options and is making it look like they are in power.
We should not forget that Zeke maybe an Eldian, but he was raised in Marley. Every Marleyan has been forced into believing that Eldians are devils. The brain-washing has been induced to the extent that Eldians themselves have surrendered their rights to a life of equal standing.
Not to mention, Zeke’s personal history, since he had reported his own parents who were involved in an anti-Marley faction. It is hard to believe that his notions have changed this radically.
Does Zeke really want the freedom of Eldians? Or does his intention lie somewhere else altogether?
4. Grieving for Sasha
A short but impactful scene is included in the episode where Mikasa and others mourn Sasha’s death. Scenes of her enjoying Nicolo’s cooking are shown. Conny comments that Sasha had been like her twin, and now he feels like he has lost half of him.
Nicolo, a Marleyan, is also grieving for her. This scene further clarifies just how meaningless everything is! A war for protecting lives ends up killing them. A person has to either fight or die. Even though another way is desperately sought after, no other way except violence shows itself.
