It is time to say goodbye to our favorite manga about mass genocide as Attack on Titan’s final chapter has been revealed. Chapter 139 has put our hearts at ease from the countless wars we have gone through alongside Eren, Mikasa, and Armin.
The spoilers are out, and Eren is not returning anymore. 80% of humanity has been wiped off clean, and the sin is too great for Eren to be redeemed. The chapter ties up the loose ends and gives us an estimate of what awaits the Eldian Empire.
1. Why did Eren Change to Kill Civilians?
Chapter 139 gives us a concrete answer to why Eren had supposedly turned evil. It seems like we were half-right; he did have an ulterior motive. He believed that the extermination of either Eldians or the rest of the human race would truly bring about peace.
However, he did not stop Armin and the others from killing him. He basically instructed them to kill him so that an option of peace emerges. He posed as the greater threat which would unite humanity to defeat him.
2. Why did Eren Hurt Mikasa and His Friends?
Eren explains to Armin that he did so to push them all away from him. Since Armin, Mikasa, and other Paradisians were involved in killing the Founding Titan, the world now owes them.
These people will later on become beacons who might bring about unity amongst everyone. The age-old hatred against Eldians will be diffused if they owe their lives to the same Eldians.
3. Why did Ymir Submit to King Fritz & How was She Freed?
The founder Ymir has power that rivaled the Gods, yet she submitted to a man who enslaved her. Eren had seen the feelings of Ymir from her memories, and he confirms that Ymir was in love with Fritz. She had yearned for freedom for over 2000 years but still couldn’t achieve it.
The one who eventually freed her is Mikasa. Mikasa is in love with Eren, yet she killed him. In a way, Mikasa might have shown the path to freedom to Ymir. When Mikasa decided to kill Eren, she also broke free of her Ackerman instinct.
4. Eren Finally Confesses His Feelings
Who knew that Eren was actually just as love-smitten as Mikasa under all the tough and emotionless acts? Of course, it took a punch from Armin in the face to accept his feelings, but Eren has finally confessed that he loves her.
He even goes one step further to admit that he does not want her to love anyone other than him before quickly saying that he also wants her to live happily.
5. Is Eren Dead?
Yes, Eren is dead and for real this time. Chapter 139’s majority content consists of Eren’s last conversation with Armin. 80% of the human population has been killed, and Eren knows that there is no way to be forgiven for committing something so grave.
After Armin remembers everything and wakes up, Mikasa enters with Eren’s cut-off head. Both she and Armin cry over him one last time before Mikasa goes on to bury her lover’s remains.
6. Does the Power of Titans Still Exist?
The rumbling has stopped, the Founding Titan is dead, and Ymir is free. The power of Titans has also been erased from existence. All the nine great titans are no more, and neither can the Eldians turn into Titans.
The Wall Titans have also disappeared without a trace (apart from the destructive trail that they had left).
7. How will the World Recover?
The damage caused by Eren is too great to recover from. Most of humanity is dead, and the remaining survivors have faced a tremendous amount of loss. Their scars will never heal, and their loved ones will never return.
Yet, the heroes created after the Founding Titan’s death are trying to bring about peace in the world.
8. Eldia’s Fate; Will There be Peace in the World?
Paradis fears that the survivors outside of the island will attack them once again to seek retribution. The Jaeger faction has strengthened its military forces and has united to fight against any outside attacks.
The future of the world is still unsure as people continue to divide themselves. However, Armin, Jean, Connie, Levi, and the others are returning to Paradis as ambassadors to negotiate peace. They believe that together with Historia, they can find a way to end the useless violence.
They are coming back to tell everyone what they have seen through their own eyes. Humanity needs to know the truth and believing in that truth is their choice.
9. Was Eren Right or Wrong?
Eren was acting to protect Paradis. It was already decided that the whole world’s forces would be attacking Paradis soon. Eren chose to protect his homeland. However, we all know that mass genocide and killing off 80% of humans was not the right thing to do.
What could he have done otherwise? Only a few titans could not have been able to protect Paradis. Even if Paradis was erased from existence, Marley would’ve continued enslaving the Eldians outside of Paradis.
Eren’s motive to unite everyone against him was understood by his friends only at the very end. Once he had started the rumbling, he could not stop it. The threat to Eldians is no more because there is no adequate military power left on Earth.
He knew he was on the path of destruction and assigned Mikasa and Armin the role of saving whatever could be salvaged. The question of right or wrong falters when you have to choose the lesser of two evils.
With this, we say a final goodbye to the manga, which both filled us with adrenaline and depression. The tragic love of Mikasa and Eren has been set as a beautiful but melancholic example. The cycle of violence and hatred has not yet ended, but above all, there is still hope.
