E3 is just a few hours away, and fans of Assassin’s Creed are eagerly awaiting information about the next game in the franchise at the Ubisoft conference on June 12th. Unfortunately, there is very little information available right now about any new title in the franchise. Still, a leak has suggested that the new Assassin’s Creed may have a larger map than the previous iterations. This sounds quite extraordinary, and fans have taken to Reddit to express their concerns.
The last two games in the Assassin’s Creed series, Odyssey and Valhalla, have had larger maps than any of the previous games and have received overall positive reviews. Valhalla had the strongest opening week of any Assassin’s Creed game, and with the bonus content added to Odyssey, Ubisoft saw record-breaking sales for the series as of March 31st, 2021. Although the pandemic definitely affected the sales, the direction of the newest games should also be taken into account.
While creating larger maps for Assassin’s Creed titles has helped sell the games more, fans are worried that the studio may focus more on the number of things to do and places to visit over the quality of the storyline. Considering the franchise started as a story-driven series, a shift to a massive map with thousands of things to do would be a very significant departure. Additionally, many fans have suggested that they prefer to experience a smaller, more detailed space than a more enormous but inevitably empty sandbox. Many commenters were displeased with the size of Valhalla’s map, saying that the game is full of “empty fluff” and that it led to the game feeling “unpolished” due to the size.
Other fans came to the support of Ubisoft, saying that they enjoyed Valhalla’s world and that it was detailed enough, with others simply saying that they “actually want larger maps.” While many have suggested that they don’t have hundreds of hours to invest in massive RPGs, others were happy with getting more for their dollar.
While a massive empty map is definitely disappointing, it’s still too early to decide if it would be a good or bad thing considering we don’t have any information regarding the next game. We’ll have to wait for E3 to begin to know if we’re going to be stepping into the shoes of another Assassin soon.
