Zack Snyder’s upcoming post-apocalyptic zombie heist movie Army of the Dead is all set to premiere this summer. The director, who is seeing a very successful year, started it off with the release of his long-awaited cut of the Justice League, which garnered a lot of praise.
Now, Snyder fans have another major project to look forward to, Army of the Dead. Last week, Netflix dropped the first official trailer for the movie, which is nothing short of riveting, gory action.
It establishes the film’s basic premise, focusing on a group of ex-mercenaries plotting a heist on a zombie-infested casino in Las Vegas. Snyder, who made his debut with a remake of the 1978 horror film Dawn of the Dead, is making a full circle comeback to the zombie genre.
However, unlike the mindless walking corpses in the 2004 movie, Army of the Dead teases a new breed of zombies. One of the team members notes: “They’re smarter. They’re faster. They’re organized.”
The new conceptualization in the upcoming film introduces a hierarchy of the zombies, which starts with Zeus, the leader, and alpha of the group. When Zeus bites someone, they become as powerful as him, but when a different alpha bites someone, they become a “shambler” or a regular follower zombie.
Other than the alphas are the zombie brides who seem to be equally powerful as the former, and then there’s the trailer’s highlight: the zombie tiger. With their enhanced reflexes and pack mentality, they pose a great threat to the heist team.
According to Snyder, the movie’s opening scene will explain the origins of the zombies and is expected to be the heart of the story. Furthermore, the movie has already been expanded into a franchise with a prequel movie and an anime-style TV series to follow later.
