Marvel’s Eternals introduced various new characters and forms of life that exist within and beyond our universe. It is likely that with these characters, the MCU is delving into newer realms where the forces of good and evil are bigger, grander, and more ethereal. Two of the most powerful beings we met in the film were the Eternals and the Deviants.
Throughout the film, both groups face off to fight for what they believe in. While the Eternals did come out on top by the end, they barely made it through. In fact, if not for Thena, Sersi, or the Uni-mind, there’s a good chance Kro and Ikaris would’ve defeated them, and Tiamut The Communicator would’ve emerged.
So, the question arises—between the Eternals and the Deviants, who is stronger?
Both Eternals and Deviants are equally strong. They are forces that represent opposite standpoints, and their powers overall can nullify each other. The Celestials created both the Eternals and the Deviants for the seeding of planets.
The Eternals and the Deviants have vastly different traits and superpowers. However, when you look at all their powers together, they cancel each other out as a group. The Eternals are the forces of good, and they come out on top due to their virtue of working together as one.
If you’ve watched the film and wondered what exactly are the powers of Eternals and Deviants, I’ve got all the answers you need. Let’s begin.
Eternals and Their Powers
The Eternals are synthetic beings created by the Celestials. They are don’t age at all, have unique superpowers, and are incredible combatants. Following is the list of all Eternals and their special powers.
I. Kingo: Shooters
Kingo is the Eternal who can shoot energy blasts from his hands. His energy can vary with each blast based on how focussed he is while shooting. He is also an incredible combatant and great at taking precise shots whenever necessary.
Besides these, he has all the powers other Eternals would. These include superhuman strength, agility, stamina, speed, regenerative healing, cosmic energy manipulation, and more.
II. Thena: Weapons Manifestation and Mastery
Thena is one of the most skilled warriors amongst all the Eternals. Although she’s not the strongest, her tactical combat skills enable her to take down enemies with relative ease.
Some of her most significant superpowers are manifesting weapons at will almost instantaneously. She can think and create any weapon of her choice mid-combat and is a natural wielder of weapons such as spear, ax, sword, staff, shield, and more.
III. Gilgamesh: Cosmic Exoskeleton Manifestation
Gilgamesh is the strongest Eternal by sheer power. He is the only Eternal who can face Thena’s superpowers and not be entirely affected by them. His one single punch can fatally injure anyone, including a Deviant. His unique powers include creating cosmic exoskeletons that cover his hands and increase his strength, durability, and power.
IV. Makkari: Speedster
Makkari is the fastest Eternal who is even faster than Marvel’s Quicksilver. She can also create sonic booms by breaking the sound barrier and sending off energy forces. In combat, these traits can be used offensively against Deviants and leave them with severe injuries that will take some time to recover.
V. Sprite: Shapeshifting and Illusion Manipulation
Sprite has some of the most deceptive powers amongst all the Eternals. She is a shapeshifter who can turn into any person she wants. She also knows how to create illusions at her own will and can turn invisible whenever she wants while also concealing people around her.
VI. Phastos: Innovation
Phastos is the brains of the Eternals group. He can make the most complex machines with intricate designs and functions at his will within a short period. He gave humans the wheel, the mechanism to make the atom bomb, and more.
He created the Uni-mind machine for the Eternals to connect their powers and cosmic energies. This way, they were able to stop Tiamut The Communicator from emerging and thus saved the planet.
VII. Druig: Telepathy and Mental Manipulation
Druig is the Eternal who has numerous powers associated with the mind. He can read people’s minds, manipulate the way people think, and most importantly, control the minds of hundreds and thousands of people simultaneously. Being an Eternal, he also possesses superhuman agility, acrobatic skill sets, and is pretty proficient with firearms.
VIII. Ajak: Regenerative Healing
While all the Eternals have regeneration capabilities, Ajak’s healing powers can be used on others. As the leader of the Eternals, aka the Prime Eternal, Ajak is more like a nurturer who has very few offensive powers. She is also the only person who can talk and communicate with the Arishem The Judge, a Celestial.
IX. Ikaris: Flight, Lasers, and Speed
Ikaris has been compared to Superman, and rightly so. Like the DC superhero, Ikaris can fly, shoot laser beams from his eyes, has incredible speed, and has superhuman strength to knock out enemies.
Ikaris is a master strategist and a tactical combatant who knows how to leverage the surroundings to his advantage during a fight. Although he’s not as strong as Gilgamesh, his wit and cleverness can help him overpower Gilgamesh and numerous other Eternals.
X. Sersi: Matter Transmutation
Sersi was the successor of Ajak after Ikaris and the Deviants killed her. She inherited the powers of celestial communication and regenerative healing from Ajak. Besides this, she has her own unique powers of matter transmutation.
She can convert any given object into something else almost instantaneously without breaking a sweat with that power. On multiple occasions, she either saved someone’s life or killed a Deviant with the help of matter transmutation. Due to this, she was also able to stop Tiamut The Communicator.
These are all the Eternals and their superpowers. The only weakness Eternals have is that they can die if their cosmic essence is drained or if an attack can displace a large chunk of molecules at once. Their biggest strengths are the usage of Uni-mind and manipulating its power to strengthen themselves while also fighting together as a team.
Deviants and Their Powers
Now that you know all about the Eternals, let’s talk about the Deviants. These creatures are violent, vile, monstrous, and possess an unfathomable thirst for flesh and power. Following are some of the strengths found in various Deviants:
- Each Deviant’s genetics are unique, which means there is a lot of room for mutation and changes. With each mutation, the traits of a Deviant change. This makes some of them far more dangerous and stronger than others.
- Most Deviants can roughly take the traits of their victims. Since they love eating random animals, they appear to have horns, wings, fangs, etc., all at the same time.
- Kro is the most significant Deviant revealed in the movie. He is a shapeshifter who takes any form and has the same cognizance levels as an Eternal because he killed two of them and took their traits.
- Kro can actively regenerate his own tissue, yet another power that he got from the Eternals after killing them.
These are the main powers of Deviants. There are other noteworthy Deviants besides Kro, but they haven’t been revealed in the MCU yet. Generally, Deviants behave like animals who hunt in packs and communicate through roars and growls.
The animalistic features become their setback while fighting off Eternals. Without a leader like Kro, the Deviants cannot hunt together strategically as a team. The only way Deviants can win against the Eternals is if individually they are stronger and face-off in one-on-one battles. When it comes to the group as a whole, the Eternals inevitably win.
These are all the things you need to know about the Deviants and the Eternals. While the MCU hasn’t revealed how their stories will progress, I’m pretty excited to see what comes next, and how all these characters are shown, and take ahead this narrative around cosmic beings.
