Yup, you heard that right! Just when you thought the adult cartoon series couldn’t get any weirder, it just did.
A latest Rick and Morty spin-off cartoon has produced a dramatic new theory that the two lead characters of the show are actually the same person!
The drooling old man is actually having his own childhood self tag alongside him to all those space adventures. Hey, but what about the gazillion differences in their characters, IQ being one of the smallest.
Here’s what we know.
The theory posits that lead character Rick Sanchez (Justin Roiland) and his credulous grandson Morty (also voiced by Roiland) are in fact the same person. (So maybe the fact that Roiland voices them both should have been a hint.)
The hypothesis stems from the recent Rick and Morty vs Genocider, an animated short made by Deen Digital. Rick and Morty vs Genocider has been considered a part of the series’ canon by many fans, hence the seriousness of the matter.
Genocider sees an anime-styled Rick and Morty face an attack by a race of alien parasites, who bear a resemblance to the popular side character Mr Poopybutthole.
During a grisly battle, Rick gives Morty a special potion which will grant his grandson “Rip Van Winkle”. Okay, so these are actually powers that give the drinker an ability to sleep for an inhumanly long time without dying.
Rick addresses Morty as “Rick Sanchez”, while the pair’s faces overlap in the frame. This “new” Rick, who is actually a drunk Morty, then proceeds to transform into a superpowered version of himself and dies battling the foes. This leaves the now-sober Morty to grow old, sans superpowers.
Not so easy there. Here’s the real twist.
By end of this anime short, “Rick” (who is actually Morty) gets a phone call letting him know that his grandson Morty has been born. He then drinks another potion, giving him all of Rick’s memories, and allowing him to live out the rest of his life as Rick.
Furthermore, this potion-memory Rick is seen drinking the potion from his familiar hip flask, suggesting that the Rick seen in Rick and Morty has been regularly re-dosing himself to maintain the illusion!
Rick and Morty often features high concept science fiction plotlines. While the Genocide revelation would do well to keep in with the series’ willingness to play with its own chronology, this has been the hit animation’s biggest twist so far.
The theory could possibly be addressed in the upcoming season five of Rick and Morty, which is potentially set to air later this year. So what do you think about this crazy new twist as a fan? Did any of y’all see it coming? Let me know in the comments below!
