Warner Bros came prepared to deliver new material for its DC lore, gifting fans new footage of the various superhero projects at its CinemaCon panel on Tuesday.
If we’re talking about the DCEU’s most anticipated projects, it’d be impossible to leave out the upcoming Aquaman sequel.
So along with The Flash, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and Black Adam, the Jason Momoa-led sequel got its brand-new footage too. Director James Wan stopped by to reveal the sizzle reel for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Momoa introduced the director to the CinemaCon crowd via a recorded message and was optimistic that the sequel will be “the best movie of the year.”
During Warner Bros’ presentation, the new footage from the sequel teased Black Manta’s villain origin story continuing from its predecessor. (via ScreenRant)
“The teaser opens with Black Manta on a brand new ship, and it appears a dark energy has taken over him as he races towards his revenge quest against Arthur. The CinemaCon footage also presents Momoa wearing the classic Aquaman orange costume in every shot and ends with the superhero fighting a large but unfinished CGI creature.”
Black Manta first appeared in 2018’s Aquaman, where Yahya Abdul-Mateen II played the pirate and mercenary David Kane. In the movie, he dons an Atlantean suit and takes on the mantle of Black Manta.
So far, the first film revealed that Aquaman/Arthur Curry killing the leader of a crew of pirates attempting to hijack a submarine was what set David, the son of the leader, to seek revenge for his father’s death.
Orm Marius gifted David the Atlantean battle suit and managed to injure Arthur in battle, only to be defeated later on. The film’s post-credits scene teased David’s return when marine biologist Dr. Stephen Shin rescued him, and they made a deal to set out to Atlantis to find Arthur.
Before the sizzle reel reveal, Wan talked about a new technology where he put 100 cameras on the actors to capture their performance and later used it to switch things up in 3D.
“It frees me up to do other things. I’m still in the midst of my director’s cut.”
Wan added that the Atlantis we saw in the first film will now be taken “to the next level [with] these new different kingdoms and new intense characters.”
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was one of the films whose release date was pushed back recently. The sequel is currently set for a theatrical release on March 17, 2023.
