There is a certain magic to sports anime, the atmosphere feels more electric, and the music just hits different, the relationships feel more real but what gets me every single time is how beautifully they draw out the aspects of the characters that make them human.
Production IG is going for gold with Aoashi this time. The first five episodes bear testament to the fact that this show is going to be yet another banger and episode five just sealed that deal in sliver.
Aoi, now with his mother’s blessings and his brother’s gift, is on his way to Tokyo with a steeled conviction and a promise that the rest of the season is not going to miss either.
Episode 6 Speculations
While the season started off with the goosebump-inducing hype that Production IG sports anime are known for, the last episode was nothing short of a cannon barrage of pure unadulterated feels capable of making even the most stoic hearted cry.
After such a display of emotion, I am certain that the next episode is going to be focused on Aoi’s introduction to the new world that he has just dipped his toes into.
We are also going to get to know who all got accepted apart from Aoi, although those who have sat through the OP might have an idea about this one.

Episode 5 Recap
The fifth episode begins with a shot of Aoi’s mother receiving his acceptance letter in the mail and going through it only to see that her son had been accepted, one would expect some sort of reaction from her after knowing what kind of a character she is but she stays absolutely silent, setting a very solemn mood for the episode right from the get-go.
We are then greeted by Hana talking to Aoi over the phone as he had called her earlier but never continued the conversation. Upon getting to know that he never talked to his mother about everything, she yells at him to do so as soon as he can.
Her words really stick out to Aoi as he pours his heart out to her about how he feels about the situation. He knows that he’s not the best or the brightest but nevertheless, he still wishes to get his mother all the luxuries he possibly can, and the only way to do that is by going pro in soccer.
When his mother said that soccer might be taking him away from her, it really made him waver from his decision but seeing that weakness in his mother for the very first time made him go through with it all the more.
It was at that moment his mother barged in, took the phone, and reprimanded Hana for calling so late the proceeded to ask her about all the details that she needed to know before sending her son off to a faraway city, all alone.
Months passed and spring finally came, all this while Aoi tried to have that conversation with his mom but she would subtly brush him off.
Even on the day when he had to leave, she packed all his bags, made some small talk, and told him that she wouldn’t be there to see him off, thus taking away that final opportunity from Aoi for having the important conversation.
Before he left, he dropped that bombshell on all of his schoolmates that he’d be leaving out of the blue, thus not giving them time for a teary goodbye as it was never his style.
On his way to the station, his brother and he had a heart-to-heart conversation where Aoi proclaimed that he would leave Ehime with a smile no matter what.
Even after all his attempts to avoid his mates coming to see him off, they make it to the station before him and have a few pictures clicked before everyone starts breaking down as Aoi gets on the train to Tokyo.
Moments before the train leaves, his brother hands him a bag from his mother which he was meant to be opened up on the train.
Upon getting comfortable, he checks the bag to find a mystery parcel and a letter.
The letter is from his mother which is nothing short of an emotional rollercoaster where his mother gives him a card and a passbook with a sizeable amount of money and finally tells him that she is proud of him, and always has been since the very day he was born.
While the package contained new cleats for him which were probably from his brother.
All of this is enough for him to make him break his promise to himself and he breaks down into a waterfall of tears (so did I).
The episode ends with a shot of Aoi with a determined look on his face and the conviction to get the glory he promised his mother he would.
