One of the biggest threats to the human species currently is the spread of COVID-19 coronavirus, which has been spreading rapidly throughout the globe.
Due to the disease’s contagious nature, large-scale social gatherings in countries where cases of this virus have been seen are being avoided.
Anime Boston issued a press release on March 14 announcing the cancellation of Anime Boston 2020 in light of the COVD-19 virus outbreak. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker introduced a ban on social gatherings consisting of more than 250 people.
Since no end date to Governor Charlie’s ban has been mentioned, the organizers decided to cancel the event.
“As you may be aware, Governor Charlie Baker recently announced a ban on all gatherings of 250 people or more in Massachusetts. This ban is set with no current end date until the governor announces otherwise. With Anime Boston 2020 scheduled for less than four weeks from now, it is highly likely this ban will still be in place. Given the uncertainty around these new circumstances, we have no choice but to cancel Anime Boston 2020.”
Due to the current circumstances, it would be impossible to reschedule the event and maintain the same high standards people expect of the event. Therefore Anime Boston 2020 has been canceled.
The outburst of this deadly virus has also affected the production of much upcoming anime for the winter 2020 season. It is currently unclear just how much this disease will set back the schedules of the anime release.
COVD-19 coronavirus was first reported to have occurred in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The disease then started spreading throughout the globe despite the best efforts from government authorities to stop it in its tracks.
The World Health Organization declared an emergency on January 30 January. As of Wednesday, the WHO reported that there are 81,109 infected individuals worldwide, with 78,191 of them in China and 164 official cases in Japan proper.
Two thousand seven hundred eighteen individuals have died from the disease in China. The WHO reported one death due to COVID-19 in Japan proper. However, Hokkaido reported its first death due to COVID-19 on Wednesday.
As of Tuesday, the fourth passenger of the Diamond Princess cruise ship died in a Japanese hospital, although the cause of death has not been reported.
