Japanese Tales of the Macabre Unveils OP, Premiere Date And Staff

The official website for Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, the new anime based on stories of the horror manga artist Junji Ito, released a new video for the anime on October 26 2022.

The anime is being produced and animated by Studio DEEN and is set to release worldwide on Netflix on January 19, 2023.

This new video revealed the anime’s opening title sequence, which features the song “Paranoid” by MADKID. The video also included a short clip and revealed the anime’s cast and crew.

Shinobu Tagashira, who has previously directed the Junju Ito Collection anime, will be returning as director and character designer. Kaoru Sawada returns as scriptwriter, with Yuki Hayashi as music composer and Hozumi Goda as the sound director.

The anime is an anthology series that’ll include 20 stories from Ito’s body of work, which haven’t previously been animated, all connected through the shared theme of madness. The anime will include stories from several of his volumes such as Soichi, Tomie, The Hanging Baloons, and others.

Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre was initially first announced during Netlix’s Geeked Week earlier in June 2022.

Ito has also previously announced that his  Itō Junji Kesssaku-shū (Junji Ito Masterworks Collection) manga collection has an anime adaptation in the works. This manga collection contains a total of 11 volumes published between 2011-2013 and features some of Ito’s most famous stories.

Another four-episode anime adaptation of ito’s Uzumaki directed by Hiroshi Nagahama is also scheduled for release in October 2022 on Adult Swim. The music for this anime is composed by saxophonist Colin Stetson, known for his work on Ari Aster’s Hereditary.
