Andy Serkis’ Kino Loy is returning for Andor’s second and final season.
Kino was a key player in Andor season 1’s prison arc, where he worked as a floor manager of Narkina-5. He joined forces with Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, to start a revolt against the Empire and break free from their brutal captivity.
It was one of the most exhilarating arcs of Andor and gave us the most emotional scenes in season 1.
Andy Serkis has revealed that he will reprise his role as Kino Loy in Andor season 2, despite the character’s uncertain fate in season 1.
In an interview with ET Online, Serkis talked about what might happen to Kino Loy after he fled the Narkina-5 prison, where he confessed that he did not know how to swim:
If [Kino] jumped, that would be the end of him, and he would be out of the picture. But no, he’s alive, and he’s working out his next move. It’s incredibly gratifying to know that the writing [resonated]. But the fact that people are responding [and are] emotionally engaged in these characters and every single one is so well written and complex… It means something.
Kino Loy
Serkis’ remarks suggest that Kino will be back in Andor season 2.
He said he is definitely alive and plotting his next move, which implies that writer Tony Gilroy has a role for him in the second season of Andor that will premiere on Disney+ in 2024.
The fate of Kino Loy following the events of season 1 is unclear. Andor season 2 will probably reveal how Kino managed to get off Narkina-5. There are possible reasons why he could be alive.
One possibility is that Kino used the radio in the prison to call for a ride.
Another is that the Empire sent reinforcements to Narkina-5 after the jailbreak, and Kino took advantage of their vehicles to flee.
The twist in Andor season 1 that the Narkina-5 inmates were making parts for the Death Star must have a purpose and could be linked to Kino’s comeback.
If Kino discovered that the Empire was working on a secret project with these parts, he could help the Rebellion.
However, since the Death Star was hidden until the original trilogy, Kino Loy might face a more definite, tragic fate in Andor season 2.
