Andrew Garfield deserves an Oscar solely based on his denials of being part of Spider-Man: No Way Home. The actor likens the experience to playing a game of Werewolf.
Werewolf (or Mafia, as some of you may know it) is a party game where random folks are selected to be werewolves in secret. They must eliminate the innocent players before their identity is discovered. For this, lying is a crucial tactic.
When Garfield was being hammered about NWH on his Tick, Tick… Boom! press tour, he sure felt bad about lying but pretended it was the same as playing Werewolf.
So, while answering these very pointed questions about his involvement with NWH, Garfield thought about what fans would really want from him. Although rumors were floating about, he knew the fans would not appreciate him spoiling the surprise outright:
I would want the actor to do an incredibly good job at convincing me he wasn’t in it. And then I would want to lose my mind in the theater when my instinct was proven right. That’s what I would want.
Andrew Garfield
But films with big stakes will always have leaks. Garfield had to learn it the hard way when a picture of him shooting with Tobey Maguire in Atlanta had an untimely leak. He admits feeling crushed when the news broke out because he had worked hard on keeping it a secret.
Despite the leak, Sony advised him to keep denying it — which he perfected in every interview he had thereafter. So much so that even fans began to enjoy how elaborately Garfield denied the rumors:
Of course, the leaked image was then attributed to photoshop.
Although it was stressful, Garfield also found the process thrilling, in his own words describing it to be “a rare experience to play that mass game of Werewolf with every single Spider-Man fan in the world.”
It definitely paid off! Even with all the rumors, leaks, and speculations, one had to also prepare for disappointment just in case they were all false. In fact, my heart sank when the movie crossed its halfway mark, and the two Spideys hadn’t shown up yet.
Lo and behold, a portal opens and the theatre erupts into cheers! Andrew Garfield, you sure did a good job playing Werewolf with us.
