As much as Andor is a deep dive into Cassian’s life, the Rebels’ arc, too, forms an important part of the show. Now nearing the end of Andor S1, the show is slowly unraveling how extensive the Rebel Alliance is and the huge role it plays in taking down the Empire.
So while we have Cassian locked up in a prison labor camp in Ep 9, rebel figures like Luthen are planning the next move forward—one that involves allying with the Separatist leader, Anto Kreegyr.
Anto Kreegyr is a Separatist leader who has been spearheading a group to openly attack the Empire. Luthen proposes to Saw to ally with Kreegyr so they can join forces for their next rebel mission.
Kreegyr is an original character created for the show. However, the Separatists are not. The Separatist Alliance were a collection of star systems and corporates who removed themselves from the Republic and were quite hostile towards them.
The ensuing Clone War dwindled their numbers and power, and they did not find any better treatment when the Empire took over.
Saw’s bitterness towards the Separatists and reluctance over working with Kreegyr is understandable since his sister died in an encounter directly caused by the Separatist movement.
But as Luthen is banking on “my enemy’s enemy is my friend,” the Separatists and Rebels do share a common foe, the Empire. If they can put aside their differences, they have a real chance of taking down the Empire.
What is Anto Kreegyr’s role in Andor?
First of all, we’re told that Kreegyr has been poking around the Imperial power station at Spellhaus and has managed to find a weakness that can be used to exploit the Empire. This information in itself would be useful to the Rebels.
Apart from this, Kreegyr’s mention comes along with his upcoming mission on Kafrene.
If you’ve watched Rogue One, the planet may sound familiar, as it was the one that Cassian is introduced on. This is where he meets Tivik and learns that the Empire is building the Death Star.
To close the loop, Tivik is actually an associate of Saw!
All these connections point to Saw actually allying with Kreegyr in the end. Their joint movement could explain why and how Tivik got his information on Kafrene.
It is possible that Kreegyr is nothing but a throwaway mention or/and a character who never appears on Andor. Saw may not even align with him or the Separatists. But the fervor with which Kreegyr is mentioned in Andor Ep 9 makes me believe otherwise.
