Andor sure left a great impression on critics and fans alike when it premiered its first three episodes. Episode 4 trudges along slower than normal, but the pace somehow elevates the emotions of the show.
So, what all happened in this episode? Does Cassian finally join the Rebel Alliance?
In Andor Ep 4, Cassian is finally introduced to his rebel crew and his first mission with them. We also get a glimpse of Luthen’s double life. Two more characters, Mon Mothma and Dedra Meero, join the show’s core story.
Let’s revisit some of Ep 4’s key plotlines in detail and see where it sets us up for next week:
Cassian’s First Rebel Mission
Cassian reluctantly accepts Luthen’s offer, courtesy of a blue kyber stone (the ones used to make lightsabers) and a promise of handsome payment in the future. However, when he is introduced to his team under the name of Clem, they don’t take a liking to him at all.
They believe that their mission requires every detail to be carefully planned, and bringing along a new teammate with whom they’ve never worked is plain foolishness.
While Cassian hasn’t proved his skill as a mercenary to them yet, he assures them that he is up to the task. In Ep 4, we only see them preparing for what will be Cassian’s first rebel mission. It is expected that Ep 5 is where we’ll see how this mission/robbery goes down.
Luthen’s Double Life
Overseeing a rebel alliance is far from easy or even safe. Now, we learn that Luthen manages to do so with his antique collector alter-ego on Coruscant. He’s got wigs and everything!
This double life is very useful to him. Not only does it allow him to screen out powerful people who might be against the Empire, but it’s a great way of getting cash flow into the rebel networks. Not to mention, he is also privy to classified information that is only available to people of a certain stature.
Talking about valuable information, money, and powerful people brings us to…
Andor Ep 4’s New Characters
Mon Mothma finally makes her debut in Andor Episode 4. While we know her to be the vocal co-founder and leader of the Rebel Alliance (and later, Chancellor of the New Republic), right now, she’s very much undercover.
The episode plays upon a relatively trivial conversation between her and Luthen about gifts. But it’s only when you read between the lines do you realize that they’re secretly talking about how to pay the new recruit Cassian.
In her scenes, we also get to look into her personal life where she barely tolerates her husband but knows she cannot break character and leave yet.
Another new character that we’re introduced to is Dedra Meero, who is a high-ranking Imperial officer for the Imperial Security Bureau. Although she claims she isn’t working for a promotion, she seems to be all too ambitious for her own good.
Has the show brought in yet another key antagonist? I have a feeling that Dedra and Syril might find themselves allies.
