Andor Showrunner Debunks Nihilistic Prison Factory Fan Theory

Ever since Cassian ended up as the Empire’s prisoner at Narkina 5, viewers have speculated on what the prisoners of the factory are building. Many theories have been passed around, but Andor’s showrunner Tony Gilroy just debunked one of the more ominous fan theories.

Narkina 5’s prisoners are working round the clock, building parts for an unknown weapon or machine which is of utmost importance to the Empire, that much we know. But the mystery surrounding what it is, and the nature of its significance remains unanswered.

Andy Serkis has teased that he knows about the critical weapon for which the prisoners are being used for. Still, without his confirmation, the Star Wars fandom has taken to wild theories to unravel the mystery.

In an interview with Collider, Tony Gilroy addressed one such idea and stated that the show is “not that dark,” and the actual answer is not as “nihilistic” as this theory. You can read the theory and Gilroy’s full comment on it below:

Maybe we’ll just have to wait and see what Andy says. I heard one theory. Someone said, “My daughter sent me something: they’re building something in the next room, and then they’re taking it apart,” which is not true. It’s totally nihilistic. I go, “We’re not that dark.” I guess we’ll figure it out.

Now that this gloomy theory is out, we can focus on how one of the most popular fan theories just got a higher probability of being right.

We all know the Empire built the Death Star around the same timeline as Andor is set in, finishing it five years after Andor’s events, and the weapon Narkina 5’s prisoners are making is crucial to the Empire.

Serkis’ previous comments about the mystery object being nefarious and something purposeful for the Empire, along with the previously mentioned facts, almost confirm that Cassian and the other prisoners are building the Death Star.

Gilroy’s vague answers around the Death Star theory in the same interview indicate he didn’t want to say too much and spoil the show, which makes us think we’re on the right track.

If the Death Star idea pans out, maybe Gilroy’s comment about the show “not being as dark” might not hold as much since Cassian would have helped build the very thing that brought him and Rogue One down.

Andor returns with new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+.
