American Horror Story: NYC reminds its viewers that every horror story doesn’t feature a vengeful ghost or a raging psychopath. The two-part finale with several casualties and the big reveal of “Big Daddy”, is a heart-wrenching experience.
The eleventh season of the longtime-running cable series, now also on streaming platforms, premiered on October 19, 2022, with two episodes coming out weekly. This season seemed to be dealing with a deranged serial killer targeting gay men in New York City in the 80s, but a shocking twist just put NYC apart from all other AHS seasons.
The season finale revealed in two episodes what episode 8 had teased – Big Daddy was not a serial killer targeting his victims at random, but simply the virus Hannah and her team had discovered at the season’s beginning.
American Horror Story: NYC focused on the epidemic that had targeted the gay community in the late 1900s and showed how horror stories could be gruesome and brutal without involving leather-covered serial killers.
The two-episode finale skipped six years into the future, showing the gritty last moments of Patrick, Sam, and Hannah and how this disease made them realize and ask forgiveness for their darkest sins. Gino fought till the end of his life, trying to raise awareness about the illness, which was swallowing his community whole, but he, too, succumbed to it in the end.
Adam, the sole survivor, saw everyone he cared for die while Big Daddy, that is, the epidemic, didn’t show signs of slowing down. And even then, the tragic end only signified that the gay community’s fear was not placated till it was too late.
Season 11 of American Horror Story focused on real-life horrors, and the season finale left its viewers bawling on their beds or couches. And yes, we’re talking from experience. The chilling end highlights the truly heartbreaking journey people had to go through during the AIDS/HIV epidemic.
The returning cast for season 11 included Billie Lourd, Isaac Cole Powell, Zachary Quinto, Sandra Bernhard, Patti LuPone, Denis O’Hare, Leslie Grossman, and Rebecca Dayan. Newcomers Russell Tovey, Joe Mantello, and Charlie Carver.
Season 11 sets a new path for American Horror Story to pursue in later seasons, focusing on stories based on or inspired by real-life events that define a new horror genre perspective.
Given the unsettling response, the show’s later seasons will undoubtedly diverge into real-life horrors to further captivate its viewers.
