AMD has been trying to compete with Nvidia for a while in the GPU segment while also dealing with Intel at the CPU and GPU fronts. A wide range of offerings has been teased before by AMD.
As per the latest ROCm 5.6 Pull Request in Github(now removed) and mentioned in the AMD Subreddit, there were mentions of previously unannounced GPUs and expansion for the supported cards. This means that anything released after Radeon VII gets some form of support.
All of these chips, based on the RDNA 3 GPU portfolio, are based on three main chips:
- The Navi 31 designated as GFX1100 and codenamed Plum Bonito.
- The Navi 32 designated as GFX1101 and codenamed Wheat Nas.
- The Navi 33 designated as GFX1102 and codenamed Hotpink Bonefish.
The other GFX1103 is aimed at integrated IPs such as APUs. In the subreddit, it has also been mentioned that the names may be just placeholders.
It was argued that it was just mere extrapolation by changing the number 6 to 7. The only card on the list that didn’t fit the description was the 7950XTX.
Aligning with the previous rumors are the observations that the Radeon RX 7800 XT is the only Navi 32 chip user besides the mention of the high-end RTX 4070 competitor – The RX 7950 series refresh using the Navi 31.
AMD has also pointed out that they have the resources to develop higher-end RDNA3 cards that could compete with the state-of-the-art RTX 4090 based on the Ada Lovelace architecture.
The rumor also follows the fact that the Navi 33 chip will be powering the entire mainstream and entry-level RDNA 3 GPU lineup. This includes the Radeon RX 7700 XT, RX 7600XT, and RX 7500 XT, along with the mobile variants of RX 7700 and RX 7600.
The presence of just one Navi 32 GPU-powered chip explains that AMD is looking to have these as the flagship offerings, although it has been mentioned that this could change with the actual announcement.
The absence of non-XT variants is in keeping with the trend of the Radeon RX 6000 series, wherein the XT variant was announced before the non-XT variant.
During its earnings call the previous day, AMD confirmed that their mainstream RX 7000 series GPUs based on the RDNA 3 architecture would be launched later this quarter.
We might finally see an end to the rumors of the high-end RX 7900 series GPU with the launch of the RX 7950 XT, which has been doing rounds since before the RDNA 3 for desktops.
