Almost all upcoming technological hardware has a codename, but why so? Well, the codename is particularly useful to label the item in its development phase, when not only the actual name might not have been decided yet, but also to prevent the item from getting leaked to the general public.
AMD & NVIDIA both use codenames, while AMD is recently known to use colorful fishy names. The flagship NAVI 31 GPU was rumored to be codenamed “Plum Bonito” for a few months, but that has been confirmed now.
NAVI 32 and NAVI 33’s codenames were not revealed before, however, now we have new leaks for them too. NAVI 32 is codenamed “Wheat Nas,” while NAVI 33 will be known as “Hotpink Bonefish.”
Furthermore, AMD Ryzen 7000 “Phoenix” mobile APUs’ code-name has now been confirmed as “Pink Sardine.” Previously AMD used the Green Sardine codename for their Ryzen 5000 “Cezanne” APU graphics work. Meanwhile, Yellow Carp was their codename for the Ryzen 6000 “Rembrandt.”
The codename was revealed when AMD posted a set of patches for enabling the audio co-processor (ACP) on the “Pink Sardine” APU. The ACP block is version 6.2.
Interestingly, Pink Sardine carries the same “0x15E2” PCI Device ID as Raven Ridge, Renoir, Van Gogh, and Yellow Carp. Instead of using different IDs for each of those APUs, AMD is distinguishing them by PCI revisions.
We still don’t know the specifications of Ryzen 7000 mobile CPUs, but we can expect them to be similar to their desktop counterparts. For example, the Zen 4 architecture should come back with Ryzen 7000, with more powerful RDNA2 integrated graphics options.
Although the codenames have no marketing value whatsoever(other than they sound cool), it will now be easier to identify the corresponding leaks for these GPUs as AMD usually posts the update patches using codenames.
