AMD is releasing its Ryzen 7000 mobile CPUs in two lineups, namely the Dragon range for the high-end market and the Phoenix Point for mainstream laptops. This is similar to the approach Intel has taken with its Alder Lake series where the Alder Lake-HX CPUs feature a high number of cores for the best CPU performance while the Alder Lake-H retains its high-performance positioning with a mix of great integrated graphics.
The rumored specifications of the SKUs of the two series are revealed by RedGamingTech in a recent video.
AMD Dragon Range series
While both the Phoenix Point and Dragon range lineups are based on Zen 4 cores, the AMD Dragon Range series is designed for “Enthusiast Gaming” laptops.
The new Dragon Range APU lineup will be aimed at Extreme Gaming laptops with sizes above 20mm and based on what AMD has stated, these will bring the highest core, thread, and cache ever for a mobile gaming CPU.
As these processors will prioritize CPU power over the number of GPU cores, it seems that the Dragon Range CPUs will offer the fastest creator and productivity performance ever for mobile PCs. The new Dragon Range lineup feature DDR5, PCIe 5.0, and SKUs above the 55W range.
AMD is rumored to use the ‘HX’ naming scheme for its Dragon Range processors and ‘HS’ for its Phoenix Point CPUs.
The particular CPUs to be revealed by RedGamingTech in the video are
- AMD Ryzen 9 7980HX – 16 Core / 32 Thread
- AMD Ryzen 9 7900HX – 12 Core / 24 Thread
- AMD Ryzen 9 7800HX – 8 Core / 16 Thread
- AMD Ryzen 5 7600HX – 6 Core / 12 Thread
These four CPUs are to feature two RDNA2 compute units and boost clock speeds from 4.8 GHz to 5.0 GHz and maybe even higher. The base clock speeds will be around 3.6 – 4 GHz. AMD is notably including the same number of cores as their desktop variants hinting that they are going all out on these mobile CPU series.
AMD Phoenix Point Lineup
AMD Phoenix Point CPUs still rely on Zen 4 cores, but only half of as much as the Dragon Range series. Designed for thin and light gaming laptops, the new Phoenix Point CPUs will carry LPDDR5 and PCIe 5.0 support and come in SKUs ranging from 35W to 45W. The Phoenix Point will prioritize lower power consumption and more capable graphics and hence will include an integrated graphics card.
The Phoenix Point CPUs will also use RDNA3 technology which is an upgrade over the RDNA2 in Dragon Range series. As this series doesn’t prioritize more CPU performance over GPU cores, there are 6 times more GPU cores than Dragon Range, reaching up to 12 Compute Units (6 WorkGroup Processors). This means that configurations with 1536 Stream Processors are to be expected.
The Phoenix Point CPUs revealed in the video are
- AMD Ryzen 9 7980HS – 8 Core / 16 Thread / 12 Compute Units (6 WGPs)
- AMD Ryzen 9 7900HS – 8 Core / 16 Thread / 12 Compute Units (6 WGPs)
- AMD Ryzen 7 7800HS – 8 Core / 16 Thread / 12 Compute Units (6 WGPs)
- AMD Ryzen 5 7600HS – 6 Core / 12 Thread / 6 Compute Units (3 WGPs)
IGPU clock frequency is expected to be around 2.6-3 GHz giving a maximum theoretical compute performance of 9.2 TFLOPs.
RedGamingTech also shared a design for the Phoenix Point chip. This APU would be AMD’s first chipset design for laptops, featuring Zen4, RDNA3 and Memory modules separately in a single package similar to what Intel is doing with its Meteor Lake series.
It seems that AMD is targeting NVIDIA RTX 3060 Max-Q performance levels which is one area that AMD has been hoping to venture in. Hopefully, AMD can now provide insane performance while utilizing 60-70W TDP with these lineups. More information about them is expected to arrive by early 2023.
