AMD’s Radeon 780M iGPU, featuring the RDNA 3 architecture, has been benchmarked. ETA Prime got hold of one of the AMD Phoenix Laptops featuring the Ryzen 7040 APUs, the 2023 ASUS TUF A15, which is equipped with a Ryzen 9 7940HS chip.
The APU features a Zen4 core architecture but in addition to that, it is equipped with the brand new RDNA 3 powered Radeon 780M iGPU which should offer a performance uplift when it comes to graphics.
The Ryzen 7940HS is the flagship of the Ryzen 7040 laptop family which is slated to launch later this month, and it features 8 cores, 16 threads, a base clock of 4.0 GHz, a boost clock of 5.2 GHz, a total cache of 40MB, and an integrated RDNA 3 GPU called Radeon 780M.
The laptop is equipped with 32GB of DDR5-5200 memory which was in turn tuned to run at DDR5-5600. Running a stress test also revealed that the GPU on the chip was consuming around 45W of power. While benchmarking, the Radeon 780M RDNA 3 GPU was tuned to its 3GHz clock speed using a third-party APU tuning tool.
Now let’s come to Radeon 780M’s gaming benchmarks. In 3DMark Time Spy, the CPU scored 11,453 points while the GPU scored 2830 points. With a bit of tuning, the laptop and its Radeon 780M RDNA 3 iGPU can easily score above 3,000 points in 3DMark’s Time Spy graphics benchmark.
For the games, some high-end AAA games like Cyberpunk and GTA V were tested, and the results were pretty decent, especially due to AMD’s FSR technology. Here’s a list of the average performance achieved throughout the games that were tested:
- CSGO (1080P / High) – 138 FPS (Average)
- GTA V (1080P / Very High) – 81 FPS (Average)
- Forza Horizon 5 (1080P / High) – 86 FPS (Average)
- Fortnite (1080P / Medium) – 78 FPS (Average)
- Doom Eternal (1080P / Medium) – 83 FPS (Average)
- Horizon Zero Dawn (1080P / Performance) – 69 FPS (Average)
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfate 2 (1080P / Recommended / FSR 1) – 106 FPS (Average)
- Cyberpunk 2077 (1080P / Medium+Low) – 65 FPS (Average)
The GPU, being an integrated one, makes it a lot more efficient and gamers can enjoy decent performance while playing majority of the games, thanks to AMD’s FSR technology. Being an integrated GPU also means that battery life will last longer than a discrete GPU. The Phoenix Ryzen 7040 lineup of laptops is expected to launch later this month.
