AMD’s Phoenix is based on the Zen4 RDNA3 architecture. It was “dubbed” the next-generation APU for laptops. It is set to succeed the Ryzen 7000 series codenamed “Rembrandt,” which used the Zen3+ architecture.
AMD, after initially announcing the APU, had moved the launch date. This was done in order to accommodate the time requirements of the OEM partners.
The new launch date for the 7840HS is on the 30th of April with the 7840U set to come out on the 1st of May, as told by Bilibili’s content creator Golden Pig Upgrade.
Thus, the high-end Phoenix AMD Ryzen 7040 “HS” Series SKUs would be the ones to retail before their lower-power U-series. There won’t be much difference between the launch of the two, as per reports.
The flagship Ryzen 9 7940HS comes with 8 cores, 16 threads, a base clock of 4.0GHz with a boost clock of 5.2GHz, a whooping 40MB total cache, and an integrated RDNA3 GPU with 12 CUs at up to 2800MHz.
Remember that the 7040 “Phoenix” CPUs had their specs downgraded with the GPU core clocks being reduced to 200MHz. The benchmarks, however, show that the APUs offer really good iGPU and CPU performance.
The CPUs were based on the 4nm manufacturing technology, equipped with AMD’s XDNA AI engine architecture. It was also set to include memory technologies aside from LPDDR5 and DDR5.
However, it must be kept in mind that the 30th of April happens to be a Sunday. It would be unlike AMD to release a key chip like the Phoenix on a Sunday.
This would be almost 5 months after the laptop APUs were initially announced. In contrast, their competitor Intel’s latest Raptor Lake CPU-powered laptops have been available for over 2 months now.
As of now, nine Phoenix SKUs are known, coming in all three variants of the H, HS, and U series. The series will probably be divided by the TDP and clocks. The core count and iGPU specs remain similar.
