In January, AMD announced its 7000 series mobile processors at CES 2023. The 7000 series was split into two tiers dubbed Phoenix and Dragon Range.
Recently, AMD announced that they would be expanding the portfolio of the Dragon Range platform with the latest Ryzen 9 7945HX3D with 16 Zen 4 Cores, having a base clock of 2.3GHz, that can be boosted up to 5.4GHz.
The base clock of the 7945HX3D is 200MHz lower than the existing Ryzen 9 7945HX, i.e., the variant without the 3D V-cache. The 7945HX3D variant has a TDP of 55W, configurable up to 75W.
The L1 and L2 cache sizes are unsurprising, with 1MB and 16MB, respectively. However, the USP of the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D that sets it apart from the non-3D variant is the mammoth L3 3D cache of 128MB. The 7945HX, in comparison, has just 64MB of L3 cache.
On the product page, AMD mentioned that the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D has a lower max temperature of 89 degrees Celsius. This is 11 degrees less than 7945HX’s 100-degree operating temperature.
AMD has dubbed the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D “The World’s Fastest Mobile Gaming Processor.” The performance is claimed to be 15% faster than the existing non-3D variant.
Gamers will see a 23% improvement when the CPU’s TDP is locked to 40W. However, when TDP is locked to 70W, the improvement is only 11%.
AMD has also confirmed that the processor will be exclusive to one model – the ASUS ROG Scar 17 X3D. This laptop comes with an RTX 4090, and the pricing is always expected to be premium, given that it has the flagship offerings from both Nvidia RTX and AMD.
No other Dragon range processors are known to be in production as of now. The Scar 17 X3D will launch on August 22nd, and AMD enthusiasts will be ready to break the bank for the best mobile gaming performance to date.
