AMD is well known for its graphics cards and processor manufacturing capabilities. Over the past year, the company has also been working on its answer to NVIDIA’s DLSS. Named FidelityFX Super Resolution, the technology works differently from DLSS but achieves the same result: better visuals.
But, as time progresses, technology advances. AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution tech was released recently, but the company is already planning on releasing an updated version. It is called Fidelity FX Super Resolution 2.0 and has been claimed to “deliver image quality that’s practically indistinguishable or perhaps even better than native.”
The latest version of the upscaling technology should start to appear in games from Q2 2022, with it first being featured in Arkane’s supernatural FPS Deathloop.
The main difference between NVIDIA’s DLSS and AMDs FSR is that the latter lacks any form of machine learning. Intel’s upcoming XeSS, too, will come with machine learning. However, it seems FSR 2.0 will not include machine learning in the update.
The engineers at AMD have reworked the algorithm behind FidelityFX Super Resolution to include temporal data. This is a departure from the much simpler spatial solution found in the first version of the technology.
This would mean that FSR 2.0 can be used on a much wider array of technology as compared to DLSS. Temporal data has been researched in gaming for a while now, and there are many styles that don’t require machine learning to operate.
We don’t have any performance metrics from AMD at this point, but they will be sharing more details on FSR 2.0 at a GDC-sponsored panel on March 23rd.
The company has yet to confirm if their Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) will eventually benefit from the updates coming to FSR 2.0. Still, it is likely as it is essentially a driver-level implementation of the upscaling tech.
