After several complaints and an unsettling amount of time, AMD has finally confirmed that the increased temperatures and throttling issues in the Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference graphics cards are being caused due to their thermal cooling solution. The aforementioned issues include GPU hotspot temperatures, or the maximum sensor temperature going as high as 110°C.
Recent discoveries revealed that the overheating of AMD’s Radeon RX 7900 XTX GPUs are caused by their vapor chambers.
There’s some inconsistency in the cards’ fluid levels since several batches of Radeon RX 7900 XTX model and only those designed by AMD/MBA are affected. Custom cards featuring non-reference cooling solutions, and even the Radeon RX 7900 XT model with altered Navi 31 GPU remain unchanged.
According to an AMD system integrator email, AMD was supposed to release an official statement discussing this problem on January 3rd. However, this was postponed to the next day instead.
We are working to determine the cause of the unexpected performance limitation of AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards. Based on our observations to date we believe the issue is related to the thermal solution used in AMD’s reference design and is occurring in a limited number of cards sold. We are working to resolve this issue for the affected cards. Customers experiencing this unexpected limitation should contact AMD support.
AMD
AMD is giving affected customers the option to either exchange or get a refund. Approximately thousands of cards have been affected by this overheating fiasco.
Hopefully, AMD figures out a way to eliminate this problem at its root cause before any other future models get damaged.
