Hobbits Will Be A Tribe Full of Diversity In Amazon’s LOTR show

Amazon Prime Video’s new TV show spin-off if The Lord of The Rings (LOTR) will reportedly focus on diversity and female empowerment among the hobbits.

Comedian Sir Lenny Henry, participating in the show as a Black Hobbit, revealed the information on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live.

In the interview, he discussed his role in it and the refreshingly new set of Hobbits that the fans will be treated to.

Henry plays Harfoot, the most common type of Hobbits in the LOTR universe. He revealed that the show is set as a prequel to the movies and will feature a diverse range of Hobbits, not just all-white as shown in the films.

I’m a Harfoot, because JRR Tolkien, who was also from Birmingham, suddenly there were black hobbits, I’m a black hobbit, it’s brilliant, and what’s notable about this run of the books, its a prequel to the age that we’ve seen in the films, it’s about the early days of the Shire and Tolkien’s environment, so we’re an indigenous population of Harfoots, we’re hobbits but we’re called Harfoots, we’re multi-cultural, we’re a tribe not a race, so we’re Black, Asian and brown, even Maori types within it.

Fans will also be greeted with new characters, especially when it comes to female heroes.

There’s a very strong female presence in this, there’s going to be female heroes in this evocation of the story, they’re going to be little people as usual.

Characters Galadriel, Elrond, and Sauron will return in the show, but we’ll be introduced to multiple new characters too. The show is reportedly set 1,000 years before the events in the movies.

Prime Video is also reportedly putting in a lot of money as the show is believed to be one of the grandest and most expensive TV series.

The official LOTR franchise finished in 2003 with the prequel series, The Hobbit, ending in 2014; it’s great to see Amazon and the writers trying to diversify the cult classic in 2021.

The LOTR TV show will reportedly be released in September 2022.
