In a bittersweet update, Amazon announced the third delay for its long-in-development MMORPG New World, but unlike the first two delays, this one set a final release date for beta and full version.
Initially delayed from its original release in May 2020 to August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the game was further delayed to a more ambiguous Spring 2021. Today, we know that Amazon is not going to make that deadline either but will launch the game’s closed beta on July 20 and push out a full release, barring further delays, on August 31.
“We’ve been hard at work on compelling end-game features we believe are important to include at launch. These features won’t be ready for the Spring timeframe that we had communicated,”

Amazon said in their announcement.
“With this extra time we’ll be able to add these substantial improvements while polishing and fine tuning the whole game before we open Aeternum’s shores to the world.”

New content added to the world of Aeternum includes Ebonscale Reach, a land filled with “lush wetlands and towering cliffs” where an exiled empress is building a corrupted fleet to take over the entire world. Other gameplay in New World will also include a five-player mode called ‘Expeditions’ and a 20vs20 battle set-up in a primordial river basin called Outpost Rush.
Amazon has struggled to release a successful IP since the inception of its games division with previous outings like Breakaway and Crucible being shut down and/or cancelled soon after release. Reports say that Amazon is spending over $500 million a year to hit its video game targets, not including its cloud streaming service and Twitch.
Hopefully, with a new CEO bringing in a fresh perspective, Amazon Games will finally find its footing. Preferably without any more delays.
