Due to low ratings, Amazon Prime has canceled I Know What You Did Last Summer after just one season.
The YA series created by Sarah Goodman was a modern rendition of the 1973 novel by Lois Duncan and its subsequent 1997 film adaptation.
It even adopts the same premise: In a dark, mysterious town, a group of teens is hunted by an unknown killer. The spooking begins a year after a fatal accident on their graduation night. Of course, as the title suggests, the killer believes that the teens had a role to play in the tragedy and is here to avenge it.
I Know What You Did Last Summer first premiered with four episodes in October 2021, after which it followed a weekly airing schedule. The finale resulted in the grand reveal of who the killer is and their motives.
But neither the reveal of Margot being the killer nor the overarching storyline was well-received.
Although critics had praised the cast for their performance and efforts of making the story land, the plot itself didn’t do enough. Both the critics and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which sits at an average of 40%, is a testament to it.
As season 1 had wrapped up most loose threads, there was little material to carry the show forward other than digging into the Wai Huna cult. So, it makes sense for Amazon to cut its losses after a single season.
Side note: This just adds to the fact that the trend of remaking films/tv shows from the 90s may not be a sound idea. I’m looking at you, He’s All That.
As Amazon is currently trying to grow its repertoire of young adult content, it would do better to focus on the better received The Wilds and The Wheel of Time, both of which have been renewed for season 2.
The streamer will also be adapting The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han (To All The Boys I Loved Before) into a TV series, which is sure to create a buzz.
