If you’re a fan of either animated or live-action or both kinds of DC films and shows, this list is just for you! And if you’re someone who is planning to start watching all the films and shows, well, what were you doing until now? No! Do not say, Marvel! Or maybe you can. I mean, one can want the best of both worlds, right?
What I am about to do is share the release order and the watch (chronological) order of all the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) and DCAU (DC Animated Universe) films and shows so that you can get the best experience.
If you’re someone who has already watched it all, then maybe you can watch them timeline-wise. I mean, DC animated films are definitely worth a rewatch.
The DCEU series began with Man Of Steel and has 11 films and a series with future projects coming up. The DCAU film and TV series are not connected but can be watched as separate segments of the universe.
So let’s jump right in without wasting any time.
1. DCEU Films
1.1 Release Order
- Man of Steel – June 14, 2013
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25, 2016
- Suicide Squad – August 5, 2016
- Wonder Woman – June 2, 2017
- Justice League – November 17, 2017
- Aquaman – December 21, 2018
- Shazam! – April 5, 2019
- Birds of Prey – February 7, 2020
- Wonder Woman 1984 – December 25, 2020
- Zack Snyder’s Justice League – March 18, 2021
- The Suicide Squad – August 6, 2021
1.2 Chronological Watch Order
- Wonder Woman
- Wonder Woman 1984
- Man Of Steel
- Batman VS Superman: Dawn Of Justice
- Suicide Squad
- Justice League
- Zack Snyder’s Justice League
- Aquaman
- Shazam!
- Birds Of Prey
- The Suicide Squad
Just a heads up in case you’re wondering! I’ve placed The Suicide Squad in the end because Harley Quinn knows Boomerang from the previous film and isn’t with the Joker. Hence it takes place after the first Suicide Squad and Birds Of Prey.
2. DCEU Series
2.1 Release Order and Chronological Watch Order
- Peacemaker | 13 January 2022
Until now the DCEU has released only one series. Peacemaker is a spin-off from The Suicide Squad and has been conceptualized by James Gunn. The show follows a team of Waller’s officials who are on a mission called Project Butterfly.
Don’t worry, I’m not giving any more spoilers for the show. You can watch it on HBO Max.

In this list, Constantine is not part of the DC Universe Animated Original film but is still connected to the series so that it’s sort of a sequel to Justice League Dark.
3.2 DC Showcase Short Films
- The Spectre (2010)
- Jonah Hex (2010)
- Green Arrow (2010)
- Superman/Shazam! The Return of Black Adam (2010)

DC Showcase is essentially a series of short films that are a part of the DC Animated Universe.
3.3 DCAU Films In Chronological Order/ Watch Order
Alright now, this might be a little confusing for you, considering the timelines and all, but don’t fret over it. I’ve got your back. There are several films that you can watch in any order and even as standalone films, so we’ll start with those.
3.4 Unconnected Films That Can Be Watched As Standalones
- Superman: Doomsday (2007)
- Justice League: The New Frontier (2008)
- Batman: Gotham Knight (2008)
- Wonder Woman (2009)
- Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010)
- Under the Red Hood (2010)
- All-Star Superman (2011)
- Batman: Year One (2011)**
- Justice League: Doom (2012)

- Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018)
- Superman: Red Son (2020)
- Batman: Death in the Family (2020)
- Batman: Soul of the Dragon (2021)
- Injustice (2021)
The Short film Catwoman is connected to Batman Year One, and hence it’s better to watch it after watching the film.
3.5 Green Lantern Films
- Green Lantern: First Flight (2009)
- Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (2011)
These two Green Lantern films are connected but not to any other films which have Green Lantern in them.
3.6 Superman/Batman Films
- Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (2009)
- Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (2010)
Like the Green Lantern films, even these two are not connected with other films but are connected with each other.
3.7 The New 52
- Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013)
- Justice League: War (2014)
- Son of Batman (2014)
- Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (2015)

- Reign of the Supermen (2019)
- Batman Hush (2019)
- Wonder Woman: Bloodlines (2019)
- Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020)
The New 52 is the longest continuity of DC Animated Films out there. They are a treat to watch and can give you the feel of a complete saga!
Also, just a heads up, the DC Showcase film Nightwing And Robin is related to Justice League: Throne Of Atlantis. So you can watch it with that.
3.8 DC Rebirth
After The New 52 series, a new continuity began with DC Rebirth. This started with the following films.
- Superman: The Man Of Tomorrow (2020)
- Justice Society: Worl War II (2021)
3.9 The Dark Knight Returns
- The Dark Knight Returns Part 1
- The Dark Knight Returns Part 2
3.10 Bruce Trimm
- Batman And Harley Quinn (2017)
- Justice League VS. The Fatal Five (2019)
These films come from when Bruce Trimm was the producer and was the man behind the DC Animated Universe in 1992.
3.11 Batman: The Long Halloween
- Batman: The Long Halloween Part 1 (2021)
- Batman: The Long Halloween Part 2 (2021)
- DC’s Injustice (2021)
And with these two latest additions to the universe, the list comes to an end. You can start from the New 52 or right from the beginning, but I suggest you watch it in the production/release order. I think that keeps the surprise intact and maybe that’s what will give you the best experience.
But hang in there we’re not done yet. There’s still the DCAU TV shows we’ve got to cover. Don’t worry, that list isn’t as elaborate as this and is fairly easy to understand.
4. DCAU TV Shows, Shorts + Movies
4.1 Release Order
- Batman: The Animated Series (1992 – 1995)

This is the comprehensive release order of the DC animated series universe. Although there might have been some back and forth between the release of seasons from different shows if you’re looking for a release order. This one’s the best one to go by.
4.2 Chronological Watch Order

- The Zeta Project (Season 2) (2002)
- Batman Beyond (Season 3) (2000)
- Justice League Unlimited (Season 2, Episode 26 – “Epilogue”)
This is the complete chronological order that can help you experience the TV universe best. There are a few shorts and movies that may or may not fall under this watch order. So it is best that you watch them separately once you’re done with these TV shows.
4.3 Shorts + Movies
- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
- Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero
- Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman
- Batman & Harley Quinn
- Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
These are the additional shorts and movies. While some are canon, others are not. You would notice Batman & Harley Quinn being mentioned in the DCAU movies list as well. This is because it is pretty recent but also is relevant to the TV series timeline even if it doesn’t impact it much. So watch it at your own discretion.
Now that you’ve got the complete DCEU and DCAU watch order you can enjoy the entire universe by jumping right into it! My job here’s done, and y’all can thank me later!
5. About DC Movies
DC Comics is one of the largest and oldest American comic book publishers. It produces material featuring numerous well-known superhero characters, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, and Green Arrow. Most of this material takes place in a shared fictional universe, which also features teams such as the Justice League, the Suicide Squad, and the Teen Titans. The company has also published non-DC Universe-related material, including V for Vendetta, and many titles under their alternative imprint Vertigo Comics.
Film adaptations based on DC Comics properties have included serials, live action and animated films, direct-to-video releases, television films and documentary films.
