Herogasm is finally here. It was perhaps the most-awaited episode of the show, and boy, it delivered! Herogasm surprised us with numerous elements, and one of the most remarkable ones was the special appearances/cameos in the episode.
Here’s a list of all the actors, stars, and celebrities who appeared in the episode:
- Patton Oswalt
- Josh Gad
- Mila Kunis
- Ashton Kutcher
- Elizabeth Banks
- Kumail Nanjiani
- Aisha Tyler
- Rose Byrne
Cameos have become quite common in films and shows now. However, many of them seem like throw-off moments and exist just for the sake of it. But The Boys seems to be nailing it with the cameo game. Here’s how.
The Boys is a satirical show which takes a dig at not just the superheroes but even the real world and many things that occur in it. In their latest episode, Herogasm, they took a dig at Gal Gadot’s Imagine video, released way back in 2020.
If you’re one of those who do not know much about it, I’d say you’re lucky. The video was essentially a bunch of actors and celebrities singing John Lennon’s Imagine as a means to cheer people up. It was during the COVID-19 lockdown, and this was supposed to be a way to get people off their “gloomy moods”. Needless to say, the video faced a lot of backlash and was called tone-deaf, indifferent, and outright elitist.
The Boys: Herogasm pokes fun at this by associating the video as a reaction to the supervillain attacks. Deep started the video by saying they have all been affected “no matter who they are.” He even quotes Gal Gadot directly, “We’re all in this together.”
The irony here is impossible to miss. Supervillain attacks affect civilians and not the supes. After all, they’re the ones with the power to defend themselves. This is an extremely clever parallel to the actual video, where clearly, the way COVID-19 has affected the rich and the common folk is vastly different.
If you thought that was brilliant, have a look at the cameos. Interestingly, almost all of these stars have either appeared as superheroes/supervillains in other projects or have been a part of such projects in some way.
For instance, Patton Oswalt played M.O.D.O.K and Kumail Nanjiani played Kingo (Eternals). Except for Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher, the rest of the cast has been associated with some form of superhero content. In fact, even Ashton Kutcher almost played Superman.
This is perhaps the perfect recipe for any cameo. It has a popular face, the writing draws insights from their real-life work and persona, and it is all tied together by an incredible overarching theme.
With Herogasm out, The Boys Season 3 has two more episodes to go, and it doesn’t look good for anyone. Not for the boys. Not for the supes. Not for the bystanders. Everyone is being affected, and by the looks of it, it will all turn into a chaotic mess, returning from which would be difficult.
About The Boys
The Boys is an American satirical superhero streaming television series developed by Eric Kripke for Prime Video. Based on the comic book of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which was originally published by DC Comics under their Wildstorm imprint before moving to Dynamite Entertainment, it follows the eponymous team of vigilantes as they combat superpowered individuals who abuse their abilities.
The show is a satirical take on the superhero genre and showcases a world where superheroes are corporatized and controlled by companies. What happens when these superheroes step out of line and rub some boys the wrong way, is the story.
