For their final season, the makers of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series pulled off a remarkable feat and brought back six original cast members from the High School Musical films to grace the fourth season of the Disney+ show.
Unfortunately, some of the prominent stars of the franchise — Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale — could not fit the project into their hectic schedules. However, other guest appearances that Tim Federle and his team arranged were truly thrilling.
Season 4 continues after their summer camp adventure when the leads return to East High for a new academic year. Miss Jenn wants to produce High School Musical 3: Senior Year as the fall show for the drama club, but her plans are disrupted when she hears that it will be filmed at their school and some of her students will be cast as extras.
As a result, many iconic stars return and reprise their roles in the fourth fictional movie. Here are six of the most iconic ones among them.
1. Corbin Bleu
In season 3, Corbin Bleu portrays a fictional version of himself. He appears again in season 4’s pilot for a few scenes but does not return for the rest of the season.
Corbin joins his co-stars in singing “High School Reunion” at the start of season 4, which is a scene from the fourth High School Musical movie where he resumes his role as Chad Danforth.
Season 4’s premiere takes us back to the start of the school year when the students discover that their school would be the location for the filming of High School Musical 4: The Reunion.
Corbin, who had a falling out with the group after the Frozen documentary fiasco, appears in the choir room to apologize and offer them a chance to be part of Ms. Darbus’ drama club in the movie. The gang (except for Ricky. Well, he’s always grumpy!) is thrilled to accept his proposal.
2. Monique Coleman
Monique Coleman (Taylor McKessie) has a nuanced role in the fourth season of the series. She joins Corbin Bleu in the first episode and reprises her character as Taylor in the “High School Reunion” song.
Tylor and Corbin propose their idea of casting the drama club students as extras in High School Musical 4: The Reunion. Monique explains that they want the movie to be “realistic, mature, and appealing to all generations,” Thus, they invite extras like Ricky, Gina, Carlos, Kourtney, Ashlyn, and Emmy.
Monica also comes back in the finale to advise Kourtney. She goes to Utah skiing with her boyfriend and decides to check out the filming of High School Musical 3: Senior Year along the way.
She finds Kourtney, and when she needs guidance on college selection, Monique helps her.
3. Lucas Grabeel
Lucas Grabeel reprises his role as Ryan from the original High School Musical movies. He revitalizes the mood by starring in the first song, “High School Reunion,” where it is revealed that Ryan is gay and is dating someone from Pentatonix.
Grabeel also joins his former co-stars Corbin Bleu and Monique Coleman to surprise Ricky, Gina, Carlos, Kourtney, Ashlyn, and Emmy with an offer to be extras in the fourth movie.
4. Kaycee Stroh
Martha Cox makes a stellar comeback during the premiere of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 4. However, that was the only scene she was in.
She probably has a more significant role in High School Musical 4: The Reunion, as she is the one who provides regular updates to the viewers about Troy, Gabriella, and Sharpay.
Kaycee also has a cameo as herself in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 1, episode 6.
5. Bart Johnson
Bart Johnson is another famous name who reprises his role as Coach Bolton during High School Musical 4: The Reunion in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 4.
The coach appears in the opening scene itself, where he asks about Gabriella, Troy, and Sharpay and continues his fierce rivalry with Ms. Darbus.
Johnson also returns during the sixth episode for a benevolent cause. He offers a quarter of his salary from High School Musical 4: The Reunion to fund the production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year.
He expresses his love towards the drama department which grew exponentially, especially after witnessing the jaw-dropping performance of ‘Dreams Don’t Die.’
6. Alyson Reed
Alyson Reed makes a cameo appearance in season 4 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as Ms. Darbus as the plot centers around her retirement.
Moreover, in some scenes, Alyson plays herself rather than her character. For instance, a flashback shows her meeting Miss Jenn at an audition and giving her wise counsel. She also joins Bart Johnson in episode 6 to donate a quarter of her earnings to the drama department.
7. About High School Musical: The Musical: The Series
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is an American mockumentary musical drama television series created for Disney+ by Tim Federle, inspired by the High School Musical film series. The series is produced by Chorus Boy and Salty Pictures in association with Disney Channel.
Oliver Goldstick served as showrunner for the first four episodes; he was succeeded by Federle for the remainder of the first season and thereafter.
Set at a fictionalized version of East High School, the school at which the original movies were filmed, the first season follows a group of teenage theater enthusiasts who participate in a staging of High School Musical: The Musical as their school production.
