On 13 March 2020, Too Kyo Games, along with Studio Pierrot, announced an original anime set to release in July 2020.
Akudama Drive has got many fans excited as it’s an original anime and not based on any manga, light novel, or game, considering a majority of anime series are based on one of them.
As the curtain rose on the criminal actions of the Akudama in the highly developed but warped society, it got postponed, and here are the new release date and information regarding the same.
1. Akuma Drive Release Date
Akudama Drive was previously scheduled to broadcast in July 2020 but has been now moved into the slot of October 2020. The decision to postpone the premiere was due to the widespread impact of Covid-19. A specific date is yet to be announced.
2. Theory Section
In this section, I will talk about various aspects of the show, which include the likes of; which studio is adapting it, what we can expect from it, about the creators and such. Basically, every technicality which can affect the production of the anime.
I. About the Studio
Studio Pierrot is adapting Akudama Drive, and I think it’s a great choice even though it may not be a favourite among otakus.
The studio doesn’t have much trust in the anime fans, although one can’t deny that it is one of the best in the industry at times. Some of their famous works are Naruto, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul, and Black Clover.
II. What can you expect?
This is a story based on villains and how they regain what was theirs. A story of redemption. It takes place in a highly developed but twisted society where crime manifests daily.
If you ask me what kind of anime it is, I would say the story takes place in Kansai, a lot of real villans appear, they do bad things, after bad things and do more bad things, they kill a lot of people, it’s like a late-night anime that these days you don’t see much of!

Blood, gore, politics, and corruption are the themes the story will revolve around. Also, exuding vibes of Psycho-Pass, this one might swoon you off your feet. It’s for those who love action and sci-fi.
III. About the Creators
Spearheading the project is none other than Kazutaka Kodaka, the creator of the Danganronpa series is credited with the tag of his original work. He is the co-founder of TooKyo games game developer studio and co-director of ‘Death March Club.’
Tomohisha Taguchi, along with Yoshifumi Sasahara (assistant director), are the project directors of the show; they both will be envisioning Kodaka’s creation. The duo has previously worked together on ‘Kino’s Journey – The Beautiful World.’
3. Production Update
Progress was steady until the pandemic stormed humanity. The show was delayed and has been shifted into the October 2020 slot. The production team posted a message on the website –
“We will do our best to create an even better piece of work with the safety of our staff and cast members in mind. Thank you for the continual support.”
4. Key Visual
A new visual with Courier, A Normal Citizen, Doctor, Hacker, Cutthroat, Brawler, and Hoodlum was released. They all seem to be in some narrow alley of the highly developed society which humanity is living in.
5. Trailer
A PV of the show has been released two months ago.
From the trailer, one can conclude that this is going to be a thrilling ride with lots of action and villain-ery in it.
The use of CGI is apparent but looks cool and also suits the show somehow. Studio Pierrot is onto something with this one.
6. Cast and Staff
The cast and staff for the anime are:
- Director – Tomohisha Taguchi
- Series Composition – Norimitsu Kaiho
- Original Story – Kazutaka Kodaka
- Character Design – Cindy H. Yamauchi
- Music – Shigekaizu Aida
- Tomoyo Kurosawa as An Ordinary Person
- Yuichiro Umehara as Courier
- Shunsuke Takeuchi as Brawler
- Shun Horie as Hacker
- Megumi Ogata as Doctor
- Subaru Kimura as Hoodlum
- Takahiro Sakurai as Cutthroat
7. About Akudama Drive
It is an original anime adapted by Too Kyo Games and Studio Pierrot.
Long ago, the world was torn because of the war which arose between KANSAI and KANTO. Eventually, KANSAI came under the reign of KANTO and became independently developed.
However, it all fell apart when the whole area became crime-infested, where police force and political powers were mere gimmicks.
The perpetrators of the events which led to the decline of this ‘high-developed but twisted society’ were criminals known as ‘Akudama.’
But how do these so-called criminals act in society? The virtues of the Akudama gathered here will clash.
