Oshi no Ko Author Launches Tie-in Story Inspiring the Opening Song!

Aka Akasaka’s Oshi no Ko is probably the most unexpected hit that we got this spring. The first episode not only ranked the anime at the top but also ran for 90 minutes – that’s pretty much a movie of an episode.

Even if it does not stay at the top spot for long, it is going to be watched by a lot of viewers, thanks to the breakout.

On Wednesday, the official Twitter account for Oshi no Ko revealed a new short story “45510”, written by Akasaka. The story is said to have inspired the opening theme “Idol” by YOASOBI. It also reveals some unknown elements of the idol Ai’s story.

The novel is freely accessible on the Weekly Young Jump Website.

Oshi no Ko premiered on April 12 and HIDIVE is streaming the series worldwide. It also premiered in theaters as an early screening on March 17.

Doga Kobo is producing the series, which also recently produced Technoroid: Overmind, which features android idols as protagonists. Daisuke Hiramaki and Chao Nekotomi are co-directing the anime, with the screenplay by Jin Tanaka and character designs by Kanna Hirayama.

The manga has won several awards and nominations in 2021 and 2022, including first place in the “Next Manga Awards”, Best General Manga in Kodansha’s Annual Manga Awards, two consecutive nominations for Manga Taisho Awards, and one nomination for Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize.

This makes it more exciting to watch the anime altogether. Ai’s sudden hiatus and the forthcoming twists set the whole story. I wonder what will happen in the rest of the season.

About Oshi no Ko

Oshi no Ko is a supernatural crime-solving manga series written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. It has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Young Jump since April 2020 and received an anime adaptation in 2023.

The story follows a doctor, Goro, reincarnated as his favorite idol Ai’s kid. Ai names him Aquamarine and his twin sister, a reincarnation of a patient at the hospital, Ruby. Ai is later killed by a stalker who was also responsible for Goro’s death. As Aquamarine swears revenge on the stalker for his mother’s demise, Ruby follows the same path as her mother to become an idol.
