With a snap of his fingers, Tony saved the world. His sacrifice also carved out a path for Peter Parker to continue his Iron Man legacy. But did No Way Home undo all of Tony’s plans?
In the MCU, Peter has always been labeled as Tony’s protege. Being recruited by him in Civil War, developing a mentor-mentee relationship, and finally being handed custody of the Edith glasses — all pointed to Peter taking over Iron Man’s role in the Young Avengers.
But now that Peter has been stripped away from Stark tech and its connections, No Way Home’s ending begs the question: Who will continue Iron Man’s legacy?
All may not be lost for Peter. Spider-Man still exists in the MCU, even if Peter Parker does not. This means there’s still some chance at reclaiming what Tony left for him and taking the Iron-Spider synergy forward.
However, if Peter chooses to give up the legacy, it may not be such a bad thing after all. Ever since his MCU debut, fans have been worried that Iron Man’s eminence may undermine Spidey’s capabilities.
Fans have previously criticized MCU Peter for relying too much on Stark tech, when he’s known to be a brilliant scientist who invents things on his own.
Plus, it’s been pointed out that he’s always had the need to live up to Tony’s expectations, instead of having his own standing.
If Marvel and Sony go ahead with another Spider-Man trilogy, it could do well to establish Peter to be an independent superhero, who has grown stronger due to his personal losses, accomplishments, and victories, instead of being “Iron Boy Jr.”
The good news is there is no dearth of candidates to “continue” Iron-Man’s legacy.
One very viable character is Harley Keener. Harley, introduced in Iron Man 3, was an original character created for the MCU. But this year, he made his comic book debut, indicating that he has a much bigger role to play.
The other is Riri Williams, who is already set to have her own show, Ironheart, on Disney+. Riri begins her superhero journey when she unwittingly gets her hands on an Iron Man suit and adapts it to fight off bad guys.
Both these characters have strong enough ties to shoulder Iron Man’s legacy without being overshadowed by it!
