Yasuke: The African Samurai is a brand-new addition to Netflix’s ever-increasing exclusive anime list. This anime, produced by Studio MAPPA and directed by LeSean Thomas, is set to take you long back in time.
Netflix had announced in October 2020 that the show is going to air in the coming April.
Yasuke is set in and after Japan’s Sengoku period, a time of war, political intrigue and massive change. Warriors were in high demand, and the samurai served as vassals to the daimyo, who were the local rulers.
The period marked a shift in the samurai culture, making a significant impact on the country’s history.
Yasuke, an African man who arrived in Japan and instantly caught Oda Nobunaga’s attention. Nobunaga was a powerful and influential warlord, famous for unifying half of Japan’s warring states.
After rising through to the warrior class, Yasuke become Japan’s first foreign samurai, who also became quite popular due to his foreign appearance and association with Nobunaga.
The anime will focus on Yasuke’s tale as he rises from a mere attendant to an elite warrior and how he must return to his tumultuous life of blades and blood as a ronin in order to protect a little girl.
1. Release Date
Yasuke: The African Samurai will premiere on April 29 on Netflix, this year. Actor Lakeith Stanfield, known for his outstanding performances in movies like Uncut Gems and Get Out, will voice the main lead character Yasuke.
Studio MAPPA, well known for its quality animation in Attack on Titan and, more recently, Jujutsu Kaisen, will be a part of this project as well.
2. Visuals And Trailers
Netflix has released three stills from the anime along with the announcement for the new anime.
The stills show us Yasuke with a mysterious little girl who he is supposed to protect. There is a high probability that the anime will primarily portray Yasuke’s ronin years rather than his samurai glory.
Netflix also released character designs for Nobunaga and Yasuke back in 2020. The designs are reminiscent of 16th-century Japanese warriors, hinting towards a possible backstory of Yasuke and his relationship with the mighty Oda warlord.
3. About Yasuke
