Activision is not playing around when it comes to shutting down hacks for its mega-hit live shooter Call of Duty: Warzone.
Earlier this week, Eurogamer (via Anti-Cheat Police Department on Twitter) reported a new cheat that had surfaced for Warzone. According to ACPD, the cheat advertised on YouTube would employ machine learning to understand the actions and reactions of opponents and then send the appropriate inputs to the controller. As a result, players using the cheat would have the unfair advantage of unbelievably fast reaction times.
Since this cheat would require hardware to function, it would make its way to consoles through PC players. On PC, since nothing is interacting with the game files and AI is handling all the boosted aimbotting, a capture card would allow that AI to bridge the PC/console gap. So, if you had cross-play switched on on your console, the chances of encountering players using this cheat were high.
Now, ACPD has reported that Warzone publisher Activision is well-aware of the machine-learning cheat and has taken down the YouTube channel advertising it. Unfortunately, while this is a smart move, the cheat continues to remain available for purchase. We won’t be telling you where it is for obvious reasons.
Cheaters in Call of Duty is no new development; Raven Software has been trying to cull out nefarious elements from Warzone’s 100 million player audience for a while now.
The developer was forced to exacerbate this process earlier this year when the game saw an exodus of high-profile players, including YouTubers and pros, who announced that they would not return to the game until Raven Software put better anti-cheating mechanics in place.
By April 2021, nearly 500,000 players had been banned from Warzone for cheating, and that number has continued to rise.
It’s reassuring to know that Raven Software takes notice of players leaving and keeps an eye out for cheaters. Hopefully, all parties behind the CoD franchise will now focus on getting rid of the machine-learning bug as it can seriously undermine competitive gaming.
