Modders for Valheim are really letting their imaginations fly for the community. Not only did they create mods which improve the textures within the game, they’ve also added a more immersive in-game experience by allowing people to customize how they play the survival game. And most recently, a fan of the game has created and shared their own mod which adds a virtual reality experience to the game, for all those who own VR headsets.
Creativity is one of the cornerstones of a game like Valheim. Players have recreated popular video game locations within the game, one player going so far as to create the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars as well! While the devs are also working hard to keep improving Valheim with regular patches and updates, the community is also doing its part to make the game truly unique for everyone’s play-style.
Created by Brandon Mousseau, and uploaded by NexusMods user manicmoose99, the experimental VHVR mod provides virtual-reality support through the use of programs such as OpenVR and SteamVR Unity Integration. To use this mod, players will need to download and install the BepInExPack Valheim framework, and must also have an HDMI that supports openVR/SteamVR. This isn’t the first mod which allows players to explore Valheim in first-person, but it is the first mod to provide VR headset support.
YouTube user Brian Tate uploaded a short video onto their channel which showed what the mod will look like once it is implemented into the game. The video shows off the first-person VR perspective as the player walks around and does the usual in-game activities. These include killing nearby enemies, crafting a campfire indoors, and collecting flint and stone.
The VHVR mod is still currently in beta, and while motion controls have not yet been added, the creator has stated that they are already in the works. So, if you do want to play this mod now, you’ll have to do it seated and with your mouse and keyboard. It should be noted that Valheim is still in Early Access, so future updates and changes to the game can cause this mod to glitch or even break. Mousseau has asked users to be patient while he works on improving it, and also encourages them to report any bugs and glitches they may encounter.
There is no time-frame to the release of this mod, but if it allows us to explore the Norse lands in VR, we know it’ll be worth the wait.
