A Very British Scandal to Chronicle the Life of the Duchess of Argyll

Margaret Campbell’s “scandalous” life was much spoken about, her divorce with Ian Campbell, the 11th Duke of Argyll being the climax. Season 2 of A Very British Scandal will depict the same.

The “Dirty Duchess” will be played by Claire Foy, who we all know has brought great, complex flavors to her previous historical roles as Elizabeth II in The Crown and Anne Boleyn in Wolf Hall.

Paul Bethany will play Ian Campbell, while Richard McCabe, Phoebe Nicholls, and Amanda Drew have been cast in supporting roles. Here’s the trailer:

Margaret Campbell was already in the limelight (which she loved) for her good looks, extravagant lifestyle, and many romantic endeavors. In 1951, she married Ian, becoming the Duchess of Argyll, and claimed that her life was quite the bed of roses.

But the thorns did come to prick her in the following years, as the marriage fell apart when Ian suspected her of many affairs.

Ian found photographic evidence of the same, and the inquiry into her extramarital life was a court case that both the media and the public devoured.

Margaret stopped funding Ian

As the trailer teases, there are two sides to the story.

Historically, Margaret has always been the one scrutinized and condemned. But Ian’s scathing comments like “Pay the bills, it’s what you’re for” and allusions to his drunk, aggressive side prove there’s more to inspect about the scandal.

It is also speculated that despite agreeing to have an open marriage, it was the fact that Margaret stopped funding Ian’s own expensive lifestyle that caused him exact revenge.

The show was earlier titled A Very English Scandal when it aired its premiere season covering the events of the Jeremy Thorpe case. The first season/series aired as a three-parter.

Argyll’s scandal too will air as a three-parter in the UK on BBC One from December 26 to 28th. US viewers will have to wait a bit as the series will be available on Amazon Prime sometime in 2022.
