It’s Black Canary’s world, and Dinah Lance will sing louder than ever.
For the select few who watched Birds of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, you already know Black Canary was one of the few good/badass characters in the film who really stood out.
And now, it’s being reported that she’s headed for her own project at HBO Max.
According to Cinelinx, Jurnee Smollett will supposedly return for the role of Black Canary on a project currently being written by Misha Green.
The site’s sources reported that WB has decided to give it a green light and that the project could potentially be a series or a movie that would likely take place after the events of Birds of Prey.
Sue Kroll will produce under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner. Other details about the project are scarce, but WB might officially announce the project at this year’s DC FanDome in October.
Smollett expressed her excitement via a tweet, officially announcing her involvement.
HBO Max is currently developing several DC movies, including Batgirl, Blue Beetle, and a Black Superman (Val-Zod) series.
In the comics, Dinah Lance, a.k.a. the Black Canary is a fearless street fighter, a highly-trained martial artist, and master of disguise. Lance is a silver-tongued songstress who has the power to turn her voice into a supersonic blast she calls a ‘Canary Cry.’
Dinah also has an on-again-off-again relationship with Green Arrow, so if DCEU is planning to introduce the character to the cinematic universe, it could be through this project.
It would be interesting to see if this project will focus on her origin story and/or in what capacity the rest of Birds of Prey will be involved, including Huntress, Renee Montoya, or even Harley Quinn.
Hopefully, Black Canary will have an upgraded/more creative version of the ear-piercing ‘Canary Cry’ than the one we heard in Birds of Prey.
