Netflix might need to watch out for people who wander around in overalls and Dali masks because they’ve been ‘Money Heist’d twice already.
Within just hours after thieves stole more than $200,000 worth of props from the set of The Crown on February 24, another Netflix series production of Lupin became a target of the second heist.
According to AFP, the robbery on the set of Lupin took place in a neighborhood in Nanterre, just outside Paris, on February 25, and approximately $333,000 worth of equipment was stolen.
Filming for Part 3 of the series was underway with lead Omar Sy when about 20 people with their faces covered threw mortar fireworks before breaking in to steal the equipment.
In a statement (via Variety), Netflix confirmed the news,
There was an incident on Feb. 25 while filming the upcoming season of ‘Lupin.’ Our cast and crew are safe, and there were no injuries.
Production quickly resumed on Monday, February 28, after a short hiatus. Part 3 of Lupin will see the return of Sy as Assane Diop, who takes inspiration from the classic tales of Arsène Lupin.
(Is it too early to point out the irony of how a series about Lupin, the gentleman thief himself, got robbed?)
As for the theft on the set of The Crown, about 350 items were reportedly stolen from three production vehicles which were broken into in a lorry park in Mexborough in Yorkshire.
Although some of the props stolen included items like a replica of the Fabergé egg and high-quality candelabras, Netflix stated the incident did not affect the production.
We can confirm the antiques have been stolen, and we hope that they are found and returned safely. Replacements will be sourced, there is no expectation that filming will be held up.
Both the incidents are currently being investigated. However, it’s not certain whether the two were connected in any way.
