Now that season 1 of WandaVision has ended, everyone is hungry for more of the Scarlet Witch’s story. After all, Wanda blossoming into the Scarlet Witch at last after four MCU films (five, if you count the post-credits scene in Captain America: Winter Soldier) was, let’s just say, quite the event.
We already know that the Wanda aka the Scarlet Witch will next appear in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, let’s see what we already know about how WandaVision connects to the movie.
1. The Darkhold Is Likely the Missing Book from Doctor Strange
The Darkhold, or the “Book of the Damned” as Agatha Harkness referred to it, is an important, ancient, extremely powerful book of spells shown in WandaVision. It is also known as the Book of Spells and the Book of Sins.
The Darkhold was created by Elder God Chthon from dark matter in the Dark Dimension, which is the same place where Doctor Strange faced Dormammu in his movie. It is said to contain infinite knowledge and unspeakable power, and a lot of dark spells. Notably, Agatha mentioned that it contains a whole chapter on the Scarlet Witch.
Though it has not been officially confirmed by Marvel, fans have a strong feeling that the Darkhold is the book that’s shown to be missing from The Ancient One’s library at Kamar-Taj in Doctor Strange.
The dangerous book has made its way through many hands over the years in the show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., before finally ending up in the hands of Agatha Harkness, who shows it off in WandaVision. After defeating her, Wanda has now taken possession of it.
2. Wanda Is Learning Dark, Dangerous Magic That Might Make Her the Villain in Doctor Strange 2
The plot synopsis for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness says, “Dr Stephen Strange’s continuing research on the Time Stone is hindered by a friend-turned-enemy, resulting in Strange unleashing unspeakable evil.”
Considering that Wanda and Doctor Strange have both been part of the fight against Thanos, one might consider them “friends”. On the other hand, in the post-credits scene of the WandaVision finale (where we hear a slowed-down version of the Doctor Strange theme song playing in the background!), we see that Wanda is deeply absorbed in reading the Darkhold, which is full of unspeakably dark spells.
This, along with Agatha telling her that she is destined to destroy the world, makes it a reasonable theory that Wanda might be this “friend-turned-enemy” whom Doctor Strange has to go up against.
3. Wanda Is More Powerful than Doctor Strange
A key revelation was made in the season finale of WandaVision when Agatha told Wanda that her power exceeds that of the Sorcerer Supreme.
While Agatha did not mention Doctor Strange by name, we know that he is the Sorcerer Supreme i.e. the most powerful magician on the planet since the death of The Ancient One.
The fact that Wanda is more powerful than Doctor Strange (and is busy learning some seriously dark spells) does not bode well for what happens in the next MCU flick, the Doctor Strange sequel.
4. Marvel Has Not Shown Us What Exactly Happened to Billy and Tommy
We saw the Vision created by Wanda disintegrate in the season finale of WandaVision, as Wanda lifted The Hex and returned Westview to its true form.
However, we never actually saw what happened to Wanda’s twin sons Billy and Tommy, who were also part of her spell.
In the post-credits scene, Wanda hears her sons’ voices calling out to her for help as she is studying magic from the Darkhold, presumably from another dimension. This is worth noting, as it’s possible that Wanda might end up using dark magic to rescue her sons when she appears in the next Doctor Strange film.
5. The Show Links the Story Directly to the Elder God Chthon
The Squeaky Clean billboard that appears in the season finale of WandaVision, while Wanda and Agatha are facing off, mentions an “all-natural formula using the power of Mother Nature”. This seems to be a nod to the comic The Avengers No. 187, which explains the origins of both the Darkhold and Chthon.
In the comics, Wanda and her twin brother Pietro are shown to have been born and raised in Wundagore Mountain in the fictional Eastern European country Transia. Chthon is shown to have had a stronghold as well as written the Darkhold in Wundagore.
Wanda is said to have gained her powers at Wundagore in infancy when Chthon, the Elder God, touched her and thereby marked her as a potential vessel for the future. In the comics, Chthon goes on to possess Wanda and uses her to wreak havoc, and Doctor Strange is required to help free Wanda from his clutches.
From the looks of the post-credits scene in the WandaVision finale, it is highly likely that the remote cabin where Wanda is currently camped out is located at Wundagore. The fact that Marvel made it a point to show us this makes it seem extremely likely that Chthon could be directly involved in the plot of the Doctor Strange sequel.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was originally slated for a May 2021 release, but due to pandemic-related delays, we can now expect to see it on big screens in March 2022.
