It’s already that time of the year when the Call of Duty fan base starts to speculate on the next instalment in the franchise. Previous year’s Activision release was titled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and was developed by Treyarch, set between the timelines of Black Ops 1 and Black Ops 2. A recent report may have revealed the first-ever working title for the 2021 version of Call of Duty.
The leak comes from @ModernWarzone on Twitter, a portal which has been pretty credible when it comes to major leaks from the past year. According to their sources, Call of Duty 2021 has a working title of Call of Duty WWII: Vanguard. This however may be subject to change in the future with an official announcement. The report states that the new title will be set during or after the events of WWII and has “potential for a Fictitious WWII setting where it didn’t end in 1945.”
Back in February this year, ModernWarzone tweeted that this year’s Call of Duty title is being primarily developed by Sledgehammer Games. Raven Software and Sledgehammer Games were originally working on Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War up until Activision changed plans with Treyarch taking up the creative leadership on this title.
For Warzone players, Activision has plans to release a brand new Warzone map with a Call of Duty title every year for the next five years. This too is a rumor from ModernWarzone in the same report, so keep in mind this is not official and always subject to change.
Traditionally, Activision reveals the new Call of Duty instalment in April-May every year. Last year though, they pushed back the reveal of Black Ops Cold War until late August, with the Multiplayer and Zombie mode announcements following in September.
There is no release date or release window rumor for the new Call of Duty. So all you CoD fans will have to wait until at least summer for any kind of real announcement. But that’s entirely up to Activision and they may decide to drop some teasers or even full news much earlier than that!
