In the aftermath of the storm, making the journey to Oregon seems even more dangerous. This prompts Shea to present them with the alternative of going to Colorado instead. James presents traveling to Oregon as an option under his leadership and the group opt-in. Sam and Elsa’s bond continues to grow stronger and he presents her with a pair of buckskin chaps. 1883 Season 1 Episode 9 Speculation
Despite Margaret’s disapproval, Elsa remains steadfast about continuing her relationship with Sam. To reassure Margaret and James, and also to know the way in case she ever needs to find her way back to them, she agrees to ride to Denver. Sam and Elsa share an emotional farewell and agree to reunite in June. Will they successfully find their way back to one another?

1883 Episode 8 Recap
The group is still grappling with the aftermath of the terrible storm, with their wagons damaged and cattle scattered, they try to salvage what they can. They attempt to herd some wild horses, with the assistance of their newest ally, Sam.
After his discussion with Charles, Shea decides that under their changed circumstances, Colorado would be a safer destination to travel to. Shea gathers the group and tells them at this point they have two options – to either travel to Fort Laramie or to Colorado. James, who doesn’t agree with either option gives the group a third choice – to travel to Oregon with him. Josef and the settlers end up opting for the third option. Shea agrees to stay on with them and offer protection.
Sam and Elsa’s bond continues to grow and the two go buffalo hunting. Margaret expresses her discontentment with this and Elsa retaliates by telling her she’s old enough to make her own decisions. Later on, Elsa agrees to ride with them to Oregon in case she ever needs to find her way back to them.
