1883 Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
The group, still shaken by the losses in making the journey across the river, have traveled quite a distance and are now entering a territory frequented by bandits. Elsa and Ennis take their relationship to the next level. Elsa’s mother warns her that she will have to take care of the child alone if she ends up getting pregnant. She asks Ennis what he thinks of raising a child with her and he’s thrilled at the idea. The couple gets engaged.
Josef’s decision-making is questioned when it is revealed that the wagon that got stuck in the river was the one that had all the food. He retorts by saying that he had no other choice because someone in the group was stealing food. He points out the thieves and James tells them to find their own way to Oregon. The thieves are killed by the bandits later.
While Josef and his wife’s decoy plan for the bandits works well, Ennis ends up getting shot in the chest during the attack. He falls to the ground and tells James, “I loved her.” Elsa breaks down upon witnessing Ennis’ death and is barely able to process what happened. She screams and cries over his lifeless corpse.
