Every now and then, our favorite anime shows throw a spanner in the works by introducing a character we just can’t stand. And before we know it, we’re hating on them with a fiery passion.
When it comes to the most hated anime characters, it’s not always the villain that’s the worst. Sometimes it’s the other characters that really get under our skin. So, I’ve made a list of the 10 most disliked anime characters of all time.
Everyone has their own opinions, but there are some characters that seem to be universally disliked. They’re the ones that people make memes about and talk about endlessly on forums. And boy, do they get the fandom riled up!
10Makoto Itou
School Days was already trash to begin with, but Makoto really took it to the next level. He was about as interesting as a wet noodle at first; then, he turned out to be a creepy scumbag.
Makoto from School Days is a massive prick who gets off on messing with people’s heads. He gives us plenty of reasons to hate him, like when he broke up with both Kotonoha and Sekai just so he could have sex with Setsuna and a bunch of other girls.
And when Sekai got pregnant, he didn’t take any responsibility and even got angry with her for bringing it up in public. As if all that wasn’t enough, he even coldly sent her a text about abortion clinics nearby.
I had zero sympathy for him when he died. He got what he deserved.
9Seryu Ubiquitous
Seryu may have seemed nice and empathetic, but as the series went on, she became totally unbearable. She had this twisted sense of justice where she thought the corrupt Empire was in the right, and anyone who opposed them was pure evil.
Seryu’s annoying voice and her killer instinct towards the main cast made her the most hated character in Akame ga Kill. She was a psychotic, sadistic, and unstable girl who enjoyed killing people.
And don’t even get me started on what she did to some of my favorite characters. Sheele was riddled with bullets, and Chelsea’s severed head was shown. That’s just messed up.
8Yamori Oomori
This dude is just plain nasty, cunning, and loathsome. He wears a scary hockey mask to mimic the famous Friday the 13th killer. He never shows kindness to anyone and only expresses himself through aggression.
Yamori, aka Jason from Tokyo Ghoul, is hated for being a cannibal who loves to consume ghouls. He enjoys torturing others and manipulating them to achieve his goals.
And let’s not forget how he tortured poor Kaneki for days on end. Despite being so ruthless and sadistic, Yamori is strangely carefree and nonchalant. The guy even cried out for his mom after Kaneki beat him up.
7Nina Einstein
Nina evolved into a character that I just couldn’t get behind. It’s a shame because I feel like she had potential as a character, but the writers just used her as a punching bag for the audience.
Nina from Code Geass is a racist psychopath who killed innocent classmates because of her personal grudges. She was obsessed with someone she barely knew and even traumatized Table-kun. It’s hard not to hate a character like that.
And don’t even get me started on her constant whining after making terrible decisions that she knew would have serious consequences.
Her instant “cure” from her xenophobia didn’t make sense. She killed 35 million people because of her hatred, then suddenly regrets it all and is magically cured? Yeah, I don’t buy it.
6Danzo Shimura
Danzo Shimura is the absolute scumbag of the Naruto universe. His actions are responsible for so much trauma in Naruto and Sasuke’s lives.
He leaked that Naruto was the nine-tailed fox’s jinchuriki and then wanted to lock him up in the village to protect him from the Akatsuki.
Danzo Shimura had no redeeming qualities whatsoever and is pretty much hated by every Naruto fan. He was a heartless jerk who treated everyone like disposable tools.
He manipulated Itachi into slaughtering his own clan, causing Shisui to eventually commit suicide. To add insult to injury, he even stole Shisui’s eye and implanted it into his socket.
5Gabi Braun
AOT fans will forever despise Gabi. Her debut in the last season was nothing less than a disaster. She loves war and has no qualms about killing when it suits her. But when Marley is attacked, she suddenly becomes a pacifist.
She tries to convince everyone that Marley is innocent, even though she knew fully well how monstrous her own country is.
Gabi pulled the trigger and killed Sasha, and just like that, she became public enemy number one among Attack on Titan fans. Her character was somewhat redeemed later but hate towards her is well deserved.
Sasha was the most lovable and funny character on the show, and that’s reason enough for me to detest her. Sure, she’s just a traumatized kid, but that doesn’t excuse her actions.
4 Malty S. Melromarc
It’s funny how Naofumi trusted her at first. She seemed so polite and friendly, right? But then she turned on him and made his life a living hell.
Malty is the queen of manipulative behavior who deserves all the hate she gets. She falsely accused Naofumi of sexual assault and ruined his reputation as the Shield Hero.
She even teamed up with the king to have Naofumi kicked out of the kingdom. When Naofumi gave her the perfect nickname, ‘Bitch,’ it was like the icing on the cake for fans who already couldn’t stand her.
3Rachel
The best villains are the ones you love to hate, and Rachel perfectly fits that description. At the beginning of the series, we thought she was this sweet girl who just wanted to be with Baam. But it turns out she was just using him.
Rachel is one of the most hated anime characters, as she betrays Baam by pushing him out of the protective bubble. She even pretended to be disabled to get people to pity her and carry her up the Tower.
And that devil laugh of hers at the end of the season? It just made me hate her even more. She was practically giggling with joy after betraying Baam. It’s like she has no remorse or empathy for anyone.
2Shou Tucker
I still can’t shake off the horrific memories of Shou Tucker and his monstrous crimes. This guy is a state alchemist with the nickname “sewing life alchemist.” When he’s desperate for results, he doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice his own family.
Shou is hated by every FMAB fan as he earned his alchemist license by stitching his wife with an animal, which turned her into a chimera begging for death. And then, a few years later, he fused his daughter, Nina, with their dog.
Fans of the series will never forget this atrocity. He showed no remorse or regret for his actions. He claimed he did it all in the name of science and alchemy.
He was more worried about losing his state alchemist title than torturing his own flesh and blood. Scar did us all a favor by killing Shou before he could face trial.
1Griffith
I hate Griffith with every fiber of my being, and the things he’s done are just too disgusting to even talk about. This guy is hands down the most morally bankrupt character in all of anime, and his betrayal is one for the ages.
Griffith from Berserk is the most hated character ever, as he raped Casca right in front of Guts, and he did it just to hurt him. He used the Behelit to summon the God Hand and start the eclipse to sacrifice all of his friends for power.
He traumatized Casca and turned her and Guts’s child into a demon. Then he has the audacity to act like some sort of savior when he’s the one who caused all the chaos in the first place.
In my eyes, Griffith is irredeemable. His betrayal of the people who loved him is so heinous that it makes me want to enroll in anger management classes for the things I wish Guts had done to him.
